Lupoliansky Steps Down in Mayoral Race – Ravitz Disagrees

lup2.jpgJerusalem Mayor Uri Lupoliansky on Monday announced he would be honoring the agreement between the Degel HaTorah and United Torah Judaism factions of Agudas Yisrael and therefore, he would not run as a candidate in the Jerusalem mayoral race against UTJ candidate Meir Porush.

Responding to the report was Degel HaTorah’s Rabbi Avraham Ravitz, who was quick to state that he is not so certain that Lupoliansky’s days in City Hall are over, explaining he is a good mayor, one whom the people support and would reelect, and he does not know if the UTJ candidate can say the same.

Despite the coalition agreement, Ravitz signaled the last word regarding Lupoliansky’s candidacy would be left to gedolei yisrael and this was not his decision to make.

  1. Of course it is up to rav eliyashiv to decide but the way I look at it is that if lupoliansky gives up his seat and porush looses the election, it will be a strong indication of who the powers to be in the city are. I sincerely believe that if you have a good mayor that is good for everyone, it is bad to replace him because of politics. This happened in bnei berak where the gerrers had an understanding with degel that rabbi karelitz who was a fantastic mayor would be replaced with a member of their choice and they regret it. R’ mottel karelitz turned around the city from a bankrupt city to a city that actually has not had a strike since he came into office. With the new mayor there have been so many problems that the gerrers now are voting to put in yaakov asher who is a member of degel. It is a shame that we have to learn the hard way.

  2. Is it a wonder Moshiach isn’t coming? He knows that he will have to give up his job in rotation!
Oy, what has politics and redifas Hakovod done to us?
