President Shimon Peres on Thursday afternoon will meet in Sharm el-Sheikh with President Hosni Mubarak in what is the first visit of an Israeli president to Egypt in 12 years.
The two senior officials will discuss the ceasefire in Gaza, the global economic situation, and of course, the continued imprisonment of Gilad Shalit. Many hope that Peres’ unique relationship with many world leaders may somehow compel Mubarak to pressure Hamas into moving ahead as the talks towards obtaining the soldiers release have come to a halt.
In the meantime, supporters of Shalit in Israel continue to question the government’s decision to permit the continued flow of goods and services into Hamas-controlled Gaza while Shalit remains hostage.
