Man Found Guilty In Antisemitic Attack On Israeli In NYC

A New York City man has been convicted of a hate crime for attacking a Jewish Israeli tourist in Manhattan shortly after the October 7 Hamas attack.

Yehia Amin was found guilty of third-degree assault as a hate crime for the October 18, 2023 incident near Times Square.

According to prosecutors, Amin targeted a group of Israelis wearing yarmulkes, shouted antisemitic threats including “Hamas should kill more of you” and “All Jews should die,” and then punched a 23-year-old victim in the back of the head before fleeing.

He was quickly apprehended after being chased by the victims and a police officer.

While in custody, Amin continued making antisemitic statements, prosecutors said.

He is expected to be sentenced at the end of May to 90 days in prison followed by five years of probation.

Authorities say the attack was part of a surge in antisemitic incidents following the October 7 massacre. Hate crime convictions remain relatively rare due to the high legal standard required to prove bias.
