BEHIND THE STRIKE: Netanyahu Urged Khamenei Hit Before Trump Ordered Operation

President Donald Trump approved the U.S.-Israel military operation against Iran following a critical call with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who urged targeting Iran’s top leadership, according to multiple sources, Reuters reports.

Less than 48 hours before the strikes began, Netanyahu spoke with Trump after intelligence indicated that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior officials would be gathered at a compound in Tehran — presenting a rare opportunity for a “decapitation strike.”

Sources say Netanyahu argued there may never be a better moment to eliminate Khamenei, citing both strategic opportunity and past Iranian plots against Trump.

While Trump had already approved the concept of military action, he had not finalized the timing. The call, along with updated intelligence showing a narrowing window, is believed to have helped push the final decision to launch Operation Epic Fury on February 27.

The first strikes began the following morning, and Trump later announced that Khamenei had been killed.

Officials say the U.S. had been building up forces in the region for weeks, with timing previously delayed due to weather and operational considerations.
