Diversion? After Wife’s Indictment, Spanish PM Slams Israel As “World’s Only Violator Of International Law”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez bars the use of his country's airspace to US planes involved in the war against Iran. In September, 2025, Sanchez says he can't stop Israel from "committing genocide in Gaza" because "Spain doesn't have nuclear bombs."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who said in September 2025 that Spain cannot stop Israel from operating in Gaza because it “doesn’t have nuclear bombs,” addressed the topic of Gaza again during a visit to China.

During a press conference in Beijing, Sanchez claimed that China, one of the world’s most serious violators of human rights, is the only country that could help resolve the situation in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

After mentioning Iran, also one of the world’s most serious violators of human rights, he began railing against Israel, claiming that Israel is the only country in the world that is currently violating international law.

“International law is being violated today, fundamentally by one country: the Israeli government,” he said with a straight face. “There is also an absolutely illegal response from the Iranian regime regarding a war that we have described from the very beginning as a mistake and an illegality.”

“Those of us who raise our voice against governments violating international law are being threatened,” he added, perhaps in another reference to the fact that Spain is vulnerable “due to its lack of nuclear weapons.”

Or perhaps Sanchez was feeling personally vulnerable about the fact that his wife, Begona Gomez, who accompanied him to China, was indicted this week for corruption, embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and influence peddling following a two-year criminal investigation. Gomez allegedly used her position as the prime minister’s wife for private gain.

Separately, the prime minister’s brother, David Sánchez, has been indicted in an investigation into alleged influence peddling tied to his hiring by a regional government.

And earlier this month, Sanchez’s former transportation minister, José Luis Ábalos, went on trial over allegations he received kickbacks on sales of personal protective equipment to the Spanish government during the COVID pandemic.

Opposition parties have called on Sanchez to resign.
