Israel and the United States are preparing to resume military operations against Tehran as early as next week, The New York Times reported on Friday, quoting two Middle Eastern officials.
According to the report, the military preparations are the most intensive since the ceasefire went into effect.
US officials quoted in the report said that the options under consideration include a more extensive bombing campaign targeting military and infrastructure sites; seizing Iran’s key oil‑export hub on Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf; and deploying commandos inside Iran to extract nuclear material buried beneath destroyed facilities.
Military officials told NYT that retrieving highly enriched uranium would be a high‑risk mission, likely resulting in casualties and requiring thousands of troops to secure the area and potentially engage Iranian ground forces.
Israel’s Channel 12 News reported that Israel is preparing for an imminent war, citing a senior Israeli official.
“The Americans understand that negotiations with Iran are going nowhere,” the official said. “We’re preparing for days to weeks of fighting and waiting for Trump’s final decision. We’ll know more within 24 hours.”
On Thursday, Deputy Knesset Speaker Nissim Vaturi, a member of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, hinted that a resumption of war with Iran may be imminent.
In response to a question about whether he would fly abroad in the next few days, he responded: “I would think twice about flying next week. We’re approaching a critical stage.”
