Realizing the fears of parents and the anger of the city’s PTA, the IDF Homefront Command on Wednesday morning had IDF officers escorting children to school. More than a few people questioned the wisdom of the decision, admitting that it does provide an element of security but in case of a rocket attack, there is nothing the officers can do.
When a Katyusha rocket landed near a school in Ashkelon on Tuesday morning, many parents, supported by the city’s parents’ teachers association, announced their children are remaining home. This was not the decision of the Homefront Command, but parents pointed out the schools do not have the fortification that schools in Sderot and other areas have. The disagreement led to the new escort policy that began on Wednesday.
