Former Senior Physician Sentenced to 15 Months Imprisonment

In a surprisingly harsh sentence, the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court on Sunday sentenced Dr. Yaakov Jackie Serov to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of accepting a total of NIS 3,000 in bribes from criminal Assi Abutbul.

According to the conviction, the former chief of emergency medicine at Ichilov Hospital treated Abutbul on three occasions without the patient securing an appointment, accepting the payments which collectively totaled NIS 3,000.

The court rejected the claim that the physician felt threatened, explaining others filed police complaints while Dr. Serov didn’t on any of the occasions.

The court stated while the sum is not enormous, the status of the chief physician exacerbates the acceptance of the money, which further compromises the norms of our society, resulting in the decision to sentence him to a harsh prison term.

The court explained the level of trust placed in the senior physician is the yard stick for measuring the level of his transgression by accepting tainted funds.
