Rav Aviner: Deal With Obama, Like Mordechai Did With Haman

aviner.jpgA prominent Torah authority in the Dati Torani stream, Rav Shlomo Aviner, is calling on government leaders to remain strong in their opposition to the policies of US President Barak Obama. The rav called on Israel’s leaders to take an example from Mordechai in his dealings with Haman, and not to buckle under American pressure.

The rav says there are those who explain “we must be realistic and adhere to American demand to remove outposts and yishuvim” but this is not so. Adhering to such pressure just adds additional demands.

The rav brings a posul from Megillas Esther, that Mordechai did not prostrate himself before Haman. He speaks of the “national and moral crimes” committed by evicted Jews are areas in Eretz Yisrael.

The rav reminds listeners that America’s assistance over the years must be appreciated, but he adds one must realize that Washington is not motivated by it undiluted love for Israel, but also in big measure by the realization a strong Israel serves American interests in the Mideast quite well.

Rav Aviner also brings analogies from the tragedies of WWII Nazi Germany, citing examples of documents which provided guarantees that were never honored. “We feared in Egypt” and today, were are here and where are others. The same with Syria he explains, and even Iran.

  1. Statements like these from individual Rabbanim can be hurtful to dealing with this situation, as other Rabbonim might be against the response or approach. Remember, the Purim story was about Achdus. We should therefore try to get a consensus amongst our Gedolim on the approach to this situation. These statements could cause strife and disunity, and therefore hurt our cause even further. Achdus will allow us to prevail.

  2. “He speaks of the “national and moral crimes” committed by evicted Jews are areas in Eretz Yisrael.”

    What does this mean?

  3. With all due respect to Rav Aviner, I personally think that one of the wonderful things about Yeshiva World News has been that when quoting Rabbonim , whoever they may be (not for one second am i being “mezalzel”about Rav Aviner Shlita)is the quotations and learning from Rabbonim. When quoting Rabbonim YWN has stuck to quoting Gdolim and not just Talmidei Chachomim. By quoting Rav Aviner you are entering a different world of Rabbonim, unfortunatly filthy politics etc (not that Rav Aviner is to blame). Maybe its best to continue quoting Gdolim especially on such a complicated issue.

  4. To GDG613: Unfortunately, we do not have gedolim of the same level as the jews in shushan. The masses of jews have to take the bull by the horn. Start the protest process. Create a fire storm of political backlash against BHO and his reprehensible policies. The rabbonim will follow along (because it will be expedient for them).

  5. To: #5 “rabbiofberlin” – take care before you attack. Mkarpas is, I believe, in agreement with you. He was also questioning the poor wording of the article which made it sound like those evicted had committed a crime. Rabosai, we are in a crisis situation, let’s not make it worse by attacking each other.

  6. rabbiofberlin

    Read the sentence again.
He speaks of the “national and moral crimes” committed by evicted Jews are areas in Eretz Yisrael.

It makes no sense. Its gobbly-ggok. BTW the first part of the sentence says the evicted Jews committed crimes not the other way around.

Secondly the senetce says that crimes are areas
    What does thta mean.

  7. RabbiofBerlin – and do you think we achdus was not possibly something that allowed for our ancestors to be saved. Why do you think we have Mishloach Manos and Matanos Laevyonim? We were all in it together.

To Gary L: We do live by the Torah, so we have to understand what is the Torah perspective. Sometimes these political gatherings blind us from our values and we act actually contrary to Torah values. If the Gedolim do not want to get involved and guide us, then we have to force them to take action and guide us for the sake of Klal Yisrael. Otherwise your way will be the only way and it will be chaval.

  8. WE ARE IN “GULUS” WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK LIKE THIS.

    This is called “HISGAROES BA’EIMOS”

and just for you to know Charadei jews had a better living in E.I. when we had no state.

  9. Last night I didnt know what to eat for supper and then I called this Gedolim hotline which told me to eat sushi. I hate sushi. I ate it anway because I listen to the Gedolim. I wish for the day when i will be a gadol so I can make my own decisions, but for now I have my 1800 number. Baruch Hashem.

  10. #6 – The Gedolim of Purim where Neviyim and members of the Anshei Kenesses Ha’gedolah. You would have most likely said the exact comments had you lived in the times of Rabbainu Hakodos. Something to the effect, “He is only a Tanna”.

Hashem equippes every generation with the proper Gedolim to lead. You just do your part by learning an extra blatt of Gemara. The point is not to change Obama’s impression of us or what he says or feels, but to change Hashems’ opinion of us.

  11. We should therefore try to get a consensus amongst our Gedolim on the approach to this situation.

I recall in the last perek of the Megillah it states that Mordechai was revered by SOME gedolim,,,, IOW’s there was not a unanimous agreement among the rabbanim of the 127 provinces that Mordechai acted in the correct manner. (When was the last consensus that you remember???!!)

  12. Thank you Rabbi of Berlin.

I disagree with you on many issues. But your stance on the rosho POTUS and the crime against the Gush Katif Jews is an issue on which I am honored to share an opinion with you.

  13. dave10 get a life did are you so blind that you think the moetzes has no politics? that we have a monopoly on torah? I tuly tremble in thye presence of the gedolei hadar that are only found in E”Y. but still cant fathom how the disengagement without the torah world lifting a finger to stop it. The thousands of former bnei torah that were uprooted and destroyed in many ways (even if they don’t wear black hats) will be lost to klal yisroel.
perhaps we in Lakewood Philly and perhaps even Flatbush should pay a little more attention and give a little more respect to Gedolei Tarah even if we consider them chutz lamachaneh.
why should we be scared to say what Rush Limbough and Shawn Hannety and anyone with 3 brain cells are saying. Obama loves the middle east specifically our cousins there!!!!

  14. Charadei jews had a better living in E.I. when we had no state. — We have gone through this debate hundreds of times already. Just in case you’ve missed it, the bottom line is YOU ARE WRONG!!

  15. To #4
It is very sad that you think Gedolim only emanate from the Chreadi society. Truly sad that you could think that and yes you are being mezazel Rav Aviner and his Torah. He is more than a Talmid Chacham he guides 10s of thousands of Jews and he is a GADOL.

    To # 10.

Purim they were also in Galut, which is why we do not say Hallel on Purim.

  16. Dear ChannieT.
To everything there is a season… there are times to sit and learn a blatt gemarah, and a time to take action. When Bnei Yisroel stood in front of the yam suff with the egyptian army behind them, charging, on the attack, shooting arrows (and nukes if they had them)the nation feared extermination. They cried out to Moshe. Moshe told them too, “don’t worry[der eibishter vet helphen].” Moshe then cried out to Hashem. Hashem’s response was “why are you crying out[why are you davening now?, why are you busy guaranteeing 3 hashkochus on your restaurants? why are you buying kosher cell phones? why are you just sitting and learning blatt gemarah?]” Hashem said [I’ll take care of my end, but you guys]”move forward”[take action].We’re facing annihilation now too.
