Israel: Chief Pathologist in Quarantine – Swine Flu Fears

After performing the autopsy on Eilat resident Shimon Azran, who died of swine flu on motzei shabbos, Chief Pathologist Prof. Yehuda Hiss has been instructed to remain home for one week, fearing he may have been exposed to swine flu as a result of the autopsy. According to the Yisrael HaYom report, officials fear he may infect his colleagues.

Health Ministry officials fear he may not have taken adequate precautions during the Sunday night autopsy and therefore, he was ordered to remain at home. Abu Kabir Forensic Institute officials report he only wore gloves, which is an inadequate step to protect him. In addition, the dining room in which Dr. Hiss ate was closed for a number of hours to permit cleaning.

The Health Ministry and Dr. Hiss declined comment on the report.
