There is growing concern among the left-wing as Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman continues signaling a major change in the nation’s foreign policy is underway. The mainstream media has already taken Lieberman to task for his aggressive and abrasive statements, but the nation’s new foreign minister seems determined to bring a halt to Israel’s long-standing apologetic policies, seeking the sympathy of the international community, a police that many feel has failed miserably.
According to reports, Lieberman’s staff is working in earnest to formulate new policy guidelines, which include a lowering of expectations, seeking to signal the world that a major breakthrough in the diplomatic process with the PA (Palestinian Authority) is not to be expected at any time in the near future.
A Foreign Ministry memo condemns the previous position of the ministry, for “becoming the Ministry of Palestinian Affairs”. The narrow-minded policies of the ministry’s predecessors Lieberman feels have resulted in significant damage, ignoring many key issues other than the “Palestinian issue”.
He confirms the fact that the United States remains Israel’s most important ally but its total dependence on Washington is unhealthy for both parties and Israel must built new strategic alliances.
The ministry’s memo blames past government for neglecting major geographical areas including Latin America, the Balkans, Eastern Europe and portions of Asia, and this is evident by the hostile attitude vis-à-vis Israel in the United Nations today.
16 years have passed since the signing of the Oslo Agreement in 1993, and now it should be evident to all that a peace between Israel and her neighbors cannot be imposed. Since that time, there have been left, right and centrist governments, yet the peace has not become a reality, signaling there must be a foundation for such an agreement and it is not something that others can impose on either side.
The ministry document calls for realistic expectation and to abandon the unrealistic outlook that has existed to date.
The ministry also addresses the increase in anti-Semitism around the world, a troublesome reality, and the ministry plans to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards this alarming trend.
