Meeting with Chareidi MKs on Giyur Canceled

amar.jpgA meeting that was scheduled to take place on Monday night between Rishon L’Tzion HaRav Shlomo Amar Shlita, Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Knesset Law Committee Chairman MK (Yisrael Beitenu) David Rotem and MKs from Yahadut HaTorah was cancelled.

Last week, the issue of a modified giyur bill was not presented to the Law Committee as planned, and meetings have been taking place between the Rishon L’Tzion, Minister Yishai and other officials, and it appears Yishai was now seeking the support from Ashkenazi chareidi MKs, but at a last moment, the scheduled meeting was called off.

According to a Ladaat report, Yahadut HaTorah MKs convened earlier in the day, deciding they would not attend a meeting during which new realities would be forced upon them, a setting in which previously made decisions would be presented to them as fact, without discussion or seeking their input.

MK Moses pointed out that there is no place at present to make changes in the coalition agreement, an agreement that enjoyed the support of Rav Amar, Maran Rav Elyashiv Shlita and the Belze Rebbe Shlita.

Whatever the case, it appears that the Monday night incident was a matter of Yahadut HaTorah MKs flexing their political muscle. Nevertheless, it is likely that such a meeting will take place in the coming days as the matter is going before the Knesset committee, facing a second and third reading vote.
