PM Establishes a Committee to Probe Wages

Following the Sunday weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ordered the establishment of a ministerial committee to address executive salaries. Rather than address the issue head-on as some MKs are demanding, outraged over what they perceive is a trend permitting high executives to receive excessive salaries while the working class reports a growth among the working poor.

The prime minister on Sunday met with Justice Minister Yaakov Ne’eman regarding the issue of a private MK’s draft legislation on private sector corporate executives’ salaries.  The Prime Minister instructed Minister Ne’eman to chair a ministerial team that will – within 60 days – submit recommendations on how to resolve the issue of exaggerated executive salaries, without harming the Israeli economy.

The team will also include Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, Welfare & Social Services Minister Yitzchak Herzog, National Economics Council Chairman Prof. Eugene Kandel and Prime Minister’s Office Director-General Eli Gabbai.

The prime minister also instructed Ne’eman to invite the MKs Shelly Yacimovich and Chaim Katz, who have initiated the private legislation, to the team’s discussions.
