Rabbi Lau to PM Olmert: Grant Sudanese refugee status

sudanese refugees.jpgFormer Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau has appealed to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in a letter to release the Sudanese refugees held in Israeli jails – according to the Ynet news agency. Rabbi Lau urged Olmert to grant the Sudanese refugee status, once they undergo standard security checks.

“We, the members of the Jewish people, who suffered from persecutions and the world’s indifference to our fate when we came to Israel as refugees, cannot allow ourselves to ignore the suffering and distress of other nations… the Torah orders us to love the foreigner,” the rabbi wrote.

Last week, Kiryat Arab’s rabbi Dov Lior said that Israel must not allow Darfur refugees into its territory or enable them to stay in the country.

  1. I have my doubts as to whether we should be letting in yet more goyim to assimilate into the Jewish population. Goyim generally have no hakoras hatov.

  2. After they are released, they should be offered an airfare to another country, or we will once again flood Israel with nonjews and increase the problems in the country. (that is the reason Rav Lior does not advocate allowing them entry).

  3. No, please, no. If this action to allow Sudanese into Israel, I will seriously consider withdrawing my citizendhip. This is disgusting, and a mistake. Israel has more than enough problems, surely another one, especially this, is too much. Arabs are too much already. What is next? Mexicans are free to come next, then Haitians, then….Olmert needs to leave.

  4. This is a real non-issue so long as the refugees are not a security threat. The Sudanese refugees (unlike goyish Russians who made it to EY on the pretense of being related to Jews) will keep to themselves socially, as the Vietnamese refugees did when they were accepted by Israel. There is no danger of intermarriage with Jews or confused identity, and chances are that the refugees will move on to a country with a larger community of people of their own ethnic background.

  5. We are not touchy feely liberals who do whatever looks good to public opinion. The society of the state is ruined now because of the influx of goyim from Russia in the guise of Jews, as well as foreign workers who have overstayed their welcome. And some of these Sudanese are Muslims who could join our enemies.

Also, there are other countries who would accept these refugees (after all, they are not Jews). Israel is not their only choice, and probably the best solution would be for Israel to accept them and then help reunite them with other Darfur refugees elsewhere.
