British Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from the government and is now expected to move forward with an effort to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership, The Guardian reports.

Streeting has reportedly secured support from at least 81 Labour MPs — enough to formally trigger a leadership contest within the party.

The move comes shortly after a 16-minute meeting between Streeting and Starmer on Wednesday, as Labour faces mounting internal pressure following heavy losses in recent local elections.
