Brooklyn: Tickets Issued To Cyclists Skyrocket

bikenycThe number of tickets issued to cyclists has skyrocketed since the city’s bike share program was launched last month, according to recent reports.

The New York Daily News reports that police have given out 81 percent more bike tickets than last year in areas near docking stations in Brooklyn.

In Manhattan, tickets have gone up only 7 percent.

Residents have mixed opinions regarding who is responsible for making sure people are cycling safely.

Some residents say they feel it’s the city’s job to post guidelines about safe cycling. Others think bikers should be as responsible on the road as drivers.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the increase in tickets is simply because there are more bikes on the road.
