Jack Hidary Kicks Off Independent Run For Mayor

Jack Hidary will run as an independent candidate for New York’s next mayor, the tech entrepreneur announced Wednesday.

Jack Hidary got rich by creating a website to let people search for work online. Wednesday night, he launched his own bid for a new job: mayor of New York.

Speaking to supporters in a W. 37th St. loft, the tech entrepreneur painted himself as a visionary in a field of same-old, same-old “machine” pols.

“For those who want bell-bottoms, there are stores for that,” he said. “We don’t need to go back there now.”

Hidary, 45, took pains to stress his outer-borough roots and devotion to bring economic successes to corners of the city beyond Manhattan.

“We come from a place in Brooklyn with no artisanal pickles,” said Hidary, who is running as an independent.

His bid for mayor has been compared with current Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s. Like Bloomberg, he is a tech titan and political outsider. But the comparison only goes so far. One difference: Bloomberg spent $74 million of his fortune to win in 2001; Hidary has no plans to spend anything close to that.

In a surprising move, given his stable of consultants, Hidary declared his candidacy at 7 p.m. — too late for the evening news.

He told his supporters that his message of better jobs and schools would resonate in a city he said was unimpressed with the current crop of candidates.

“We can make this impact. We have the power,” he said.
