Shalva’s Vital Role in Sheltering Evacuees

Amidst its usual role as a hub of support and rehabilitation for people with disabilities, the Shalva National Center in Jerusalem has taken on a distinct and vital purpose over the past week – it has transformed into the Shalva National Crisis Response Center.

As the conflict unfolded, on October 7, hundreds of evacuees from the southern border towns of Israel began arriving at Shalva, seeking safety and refuge. These evacuees, comprising men, women, and children of all ages, had endured incredibly traumatic days, surrounded by the threat of conflict, taking shelter in fear for their lives.

Upon their arrival at the Shalva National Crisis Response Center, evacuees were greeted by dedicated staff members and volunteers. Finally, they could find some solace and relief, knowing they were out of immediate danger.

In the coming weeks, Shalva expects to receive an additional 1,000 evacuees from various parts of Israel. Beyond providing basic necessities like food, clothing, and personal hygiene items, Shalva is committed to offering enhanced security, rehabilitation services, and crucial social and emotional support. These services are designed to help evacuees begin the process of healing from the recent trauma they’ve experienced.

The Shalva Center was officially designated as a National Emergency and Response Center by the Home Front, and its unique features make it exceptionally prepared for such a role. The building incorporates a steel and cement-based core that extends both horizontally and vertically throughout its structure, ensuring that bomb shelters and safe rooms are easily accessible from any point within the building.

Yochanan Samuels, Shalva’s CEO, emphasized the organization’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all seeking refuge.

Rabbi Levy, one of the evacuees, eloquently described his experience, stating that it was upon arriving at Shalva that he truly felt the tension dissipate, no longer needing to be on constant guard. He expressed his relief, saying, “I don’t have to be on guard duty anymore. It’s really amazing, Am Yisrael Chai!”
