Monsey – person struck & killed by auto


A 22-year old man died yesterday morning, hours after he was hit by a car as he crossed Route 59 in the village. Jamil Hala, a (frum) resident of Yemen, was crossing Route 59 just east of New County Road when he was struck by a 1997 Chevrolet van headed east. The van was driven by Victor Maldonado, 47, of Monsey. The initial investigation showed that Hala crossed the road in front of the van. Hala was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern by Hatzoloh volunteer ambulance, according to Ramapo police Sgt. M.J. Reilly. He died at 10:30 a.m., hospital officials said.

The accident occurred at 8:49 p.m. Monday. Route 59 was closed until 12:15 a.m. yesterday while police investigated. The Tallman Fire Department also responded.

No tickets were issued. Police were continuing to investigate the accident.
