WATCH: Sanz-Klausenburger Apple-Throwing Tisch on Motzei Yom Tov

The Sanz-Klausenburger Rebbe of Boro Park threw apples to his chassidim at Tisch at the end of Yom Tov, as a symbol of blessing for the coming winter.

The Sanzer Rebbe of Kiryat Sanz also held an apple-throwing Tisch on Motzei Yom Tov in Eretz Yisroel.

  1. Why not Hand Out Pieces Of cake or fruit like Lubavitch Rebbe used to, where people line up and each gets Kavod Habriyos. Or pass around the fruit gently and kindly. Peacefully, respectfully to one another, no fighting or groveling…. Marbim Shalom baOlam

  2. Wow! So meaningful. Just don’t know what the meaning is.
Maybe someone can enlighten us to what this is all about. And what do you do with the apple once you caught it? I saw a video of this frum guy at a baseball stadium in the US who gave the foul ball he caught to a little kid and everyone thought he was wonderful. Do people do the same thing at the tisch (i.e. give the apple you caught to the less fortunate)? Is this only Sanz, or do all the other teams, or courts, or whatever also throw apples? I assume someone already dealt with the issue of ביזוי אוכל (the same guy that solved the צר בעלי חיים issue with כפרות). Wouldn’t it make more sense to give everyone an apple on the way out of the tisch so that everyone feels good. Have there ever been serious accidents – like being crushed by another catcher, or hit in the eye by an apple? The Litvish like to copy everything the Hasidim do (black uniforms, violent demonstrations, etc) do any yeshivas also have an apple throwing party?

  3. throw food? What a bizoyon!!! If a child would throw food at a table, this wouldn’t be acceptable, so what are they being taught? If the Rebbe, Shlita, can do it,, why can’t I? I’m in the Litvishe world so I guess I just don’t get it. Throw food?!?! FEH!!!

  4. to all previous posts…
Why not be a bit more adventurous and ask someone to explain this custom without sarcasm and mockery
Why knock a Chasidic sect that has thousands of followers just a day or 2 after Yom Tov?
It’s a New Year with new potential. YOU ARE BIGGER THAN THIS!!

  5. “(the same guy that solved the צר בעלי חיים issue with כפרות”

No the minhag of כפרות was no initiated by a “guy”. And yes, צר לי that you cannot differentiate…

  6. 1,
I once heard that it was the custom of the Sanzer Rebbe the Divrei Chaim, though am not sure how accurate that is.
But if true, then I guess it’s legit..

  7. the same heter as for eating outside the sukkah on shemini atzeret in good weather. this are religious but not halakhic behaviors.

  8. When an editorial climate is created on a website that foments hyper-criticism — occasionally to be point of ridicule — of the Chareidi world, this encourages even more outrageously impudent remarks by some commenters. This unfortunately occurs not just regarding this article, but for numerous others as well.
Apple throwing, and tischen generally, is not my minhag, but I do know that the Divrei Chaim and the subsequent Sanzer Rebbes were gedolei olam, who knew how to learn almost as well as the sages of YWN and its commenters. A subtle shift in the undertones of the reporting on YWN would go a long way to curtailing this negative phenomenon of poking fun at anything someone doesn’t do or understand. It would be a really great way to start off the new year. Of course, if the raucous sarcastic flavor of some articles draws more clicks and eyeballs to the ads — well, it’s probably not going to happen, and we’re going to have to continue davening for yeshuos.

  9. Everyone ready? On the count of 3 let’s all write the most hateful comments we can think of. After all this is a ywn post about Jews that do things we’re not used to.

BTW talmidchochom big talmidchochom you are. The problem with throwing food is destroying it off it stays in tact there’s no problem. The problem of throwing without destroying applies to bread. I’m sorry if this isn’t line with what your kindergarten mora taught you.

  10. I can buy my own, Baruch Hashem, Thank you very much. I personally don’t have a jealous bone or mind in my body.Whatever someone has is in Hashem’s hands.
