Shomrim London In Past 24 Hours Say Multiple Victims Have Phones Stolen By Suspects On Bikes

In the last 24 hours Shomrim NW London have received multiple reports of criminals who have used bikes and mopeds to snatch mobile phones from people across Golders Green NW11 and Hendon NW4. Shomrim NW London are working closely with local Police to gather CCTV footage to ascertain the identity of the suspects. Often victims are approached from behind while talking or texting on phones. Criminals on mopeds or bicycles may mount the pavement to grab the phone or snatch it from the road. Sometimes when it’s a moped, a pillion passenger will snatch it. Criminals are known to operate during the day. Follow these simple steps to help protect your phone. – Be aware of your surroundings. – If you need to call or use your phone on the street, look out for anyone on a bike or a moped near you. – Look up, look out – Make it quick so you don’t become distracted. – Don’t text while you’re walking – you won’t notice what’s going on around you. – If that’s not possible, stand away from the roadside, close to a building or wall, so no one can come up behind you. – Going hands-free can prevent a thief from snatching your phone out of your hand. – Use the keypad lock / finger print or facial recognition so that thieves cannot immediately access your phone. – Your phone may have other security features you can use – these could allow you to wipe data, lock your handset, or prevent a thief from restoring a phone to its factory settings from another internet device. – Consider installing an anti-theft app. These can be an effective way of helping police trace your phone and identify the thief. – Every phone has a unique IMEI number which helps police and insurance companies to identify it if it’s stolen and stop a stolen phone from working. – Find your IMEI number by dialing *#06# from your phone and keep a written note of it. If you have been a victim please report to the Police on 999 and Shomrim NW London on 03009991234. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

MI K’AMCHA YISROEL: Hatzolah, Shomrim, Chaverim Answer Staggering 5,000 Calls In Under 5 Hours [SEE THE NUMBERS]

As Ida struck the Tri-State area last night, thousands of people instinctively reached out to major Chesed organizations Hatzolah, Shomrim and Chaverim for assistance in various types of emergencies. These organization have proven themselves once again to be the backbone of the Tri-State area Orthodox Jewish communities. Dozens upon dozens of elderly victims were rescued by volunteers from the above three organizations from flooded basements and taken to safety. Chaverim and Shomrim helped hundreds of residents pump water out of their basements. They responded to hundreds of calls for standard motorists, who were frightened and crying as they abandoned their vehicles in strange areas with no one to help them. Our communities owe a debt of Hakoras Hatov not only to the hundreds of volunteers who responded to these emergencies in the deadly weather – risking their own lives at many times to save others, but the dispatchers who fielded these thousands of phone calls. Working under intense pressure and trying to keep people calm, these dispatchers triaged and dispatched the high-priority calls first. The following numbers were put together by YWN after speaking to many organizations: Central Hatzolah (covering the entire NYC) received over 350 emergency medical calls in just a few hours. Shomrim in NYC (separate hotlines for Williamsburg, Boro Park, Flatbush, Crown Heights, Far Rockaway) had around 2,000 calls. Chaverim of NYC (and Catskills) had 1,300 calls. Rockland Chaverim answered nearly 1,100 calls for help. In Kiryas Joel, Chaverim responded to around 350 calls. Lakewood had around 150 calls. That is a whopping 5,200 calls in just a few hours! In Williamsburg, the sheer number of call volume was so overwhelming, that Chaveirim of Lakewood dispatched a crew of ten volunteers to travel to Williamsburg with heavy equipment to assist local residents. The Lakewood volunteers were in Williamsburg until 5:00AM. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Flatbush Assault Victim Speaks To Media; Hate Crimes Continues Investigation; Flatbush Shomrim Offers Reward [VIDEOS]

As the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force continues their investigation into Fridays sickening assault on a Jewish Flatbush man walking to Shul, NY Governor Cuomo says that the New York State Hate Crimes Task Force is joining the investigation. Video footage tweeted by Flatbush Shomrim shows the 41-year-old Orthodox Jewish man walking to Shul when two men approached him from behind and repeatedly punched him in the face with a closed fist, shortly after 5:45 a.m. Friday. The man was not taken to a hospital and refused medical attention at the scene. Police said the suspects took the man’s Tefillin bag and ran. Thankfully, Shomrim recovered the mans Tefillin a few blocks away. The victim, Levi Zupnik, says that he never saw his attackers, and no words were exchanged before the assault took place. He quickly ran to a nearby home and rang the bell while simultaneously calling Flatbush Shromim, who in turn called 911. Both Shomrim and the NYPD arrived on the scene in minutes, but both attackers had fled the area. The NYPD and Flatbush Shomrim have both increased their patrols in the neighborhood, and Shomrim offered $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Residents of Modi’in Illit Launch “Shomrim” In Order To Combat Break-Ins By Palestinian Thieves

Over the past few weeks, there has been a wave of crime in the Chareidi city of Modi’in Illit and it is suspected of being perpetrated by Arab thieves coming from nearby Palestinian villages. The suspects have been tearing holes in the town’s security fence and entering the city in order to steal from private homes. Thus far, there has been no real response from the IDF or the police. On Tuesday morning, local residents gathered together in order to protect their homes and succeeded in apprehending a number of infiltrators. The first infiltrator was spotted at around 3:00AM, having entered via a hole in the security fence. A second Arab was located several hours later. They were both handed over to the police, who placed them under arrest. As a result of the break-ins, many residents instituted a local patrol which they are calling Ha’Shomrim, a volunteer patrol force comprised of young men who are all residents of the city itself. One of the new group’s volunteers told reporters: “We’re happy that Ha’Shomrim now exists, and we’re determined to do our job properly.” However, he stressed that “although up until now, those Arabs who have broken into the city undoubtedly came to steal from the residents, they could equally have been terrorists planning attacks. In fact, several have been armed with tear gas canisters, and there have also been reports of infiltrators armed with knives, though that hasn’t been confirmed. The response of residents here has been incredibly supportive. After several months of break-ins, about eight or nine such incidents, we realized that we would have to take matters into our own hands, as there had been no IDF or police response to people entering the city via holes in the security fence.” He added, “The municipality wasn’t entirely on-board but after a few weeks we straightened things out with them and now they’re doing all they can to support us.” A police statement noted that: “Police forces operating at enhanced strength against attempts to break into the city of Modi’in Illit heard cries from a private yard. A police unit sent to the scene located a Palestinian suspect in the yard and arrested him. “A short while later, another report was received regarding a Palestinian suspect who had been apprehended by a number of local residents. Police forces who arrived at the scene identified the suspect who was wounded and he was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

TODAY: Boro Park Shomrim Bike Registration

Boro Park Shomrim (BSSP) is having their annual bike etching registrations today, Sunday. If a stolen bike is recovered by Shomrim, they will be able to locate its proper owner through the numbers etched in your bike. Last year, many bicycles which had been previously registered were stolen, and police later recovered many of them – and the owners got them back. In contrast, bike owners who don’t register bikes that later get stolen almost never recover their cycles; even if the police later find a bunch of stolen bikes, it’s almost impossible to match a particular bike back up with its owner if there is no registration number, and such recovered bikes are usually auctioned off by the Police Department, along with other unclaimed recovered merchandise. The event will be held from 2:00PM – 6:00PM at 18th Avenue and 56th Street (18th Avenue Park). PLEASE PRE-REGISTER FOR THE EVENT BY VISITING BPSHOMRIM.BIKE

Boro Park Shomrim Apprehend Man Who Smashed Windows Of Multiple Shuls & Jewish-Owned Businesses

Thanks to the fast response by Boro Park Shomrim, a suspect who smashed the windows of multiple Shuls and Jewish-owned businesses, was taken into custody early this morning. It began when Shomrim received a call on their hotline at around 4:30AM. The caller stated he had just witnessed a man throwing a rock through a storefront at 18th Avenue and 48th Street. Responding Shomrim volunteers canvassed the streets until they found a man on 18th Avenue and East 2nd Street matching the description of the suspect. The caller was brought to the area, and positively identified the suspect. The NYPD was called, and the man was taken into custody on Ocean Parkway and Avenue H. Meanwhile, the Shomrim hotline began ringing from various store-owners – and at least two Shuls in the neighborhood – reporting that their windows had been smashed. Shomrim retrieved security-camera footage from multiple locations, and sure enough, it was the same suspect responsible for all the incidents. He has been charged with vandalism; it does not appear to be hate-related at this point. SALUTING FLATBUSH HATZOLAH HEROES: Flatbush Shomrim, NYPD, FDNY And Emergency Vehicle Convoy Thanks Volunteers

Hakoras Hatov, gratitude, is one of the fundamentals of being Jewish, and there is no greater organization in our midst that needs our Hakoras Hatov, then the members of Hatzolah in every neighborhood. Hatzolah is there for your communities, with their incredible 2 minute response time, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Unfortunately, there was no greater time since the founding of Hatzolah around 50 years ago, when their services were used, more than during the COVID-19 pandemic. At one point, Hatzolah across NYC was responding to more than 550 calls a day (actual ambulance responses) throughout all the various neighborhoods. During the peak of the crisis, the Hatzolah emergency hotline was fielding over 1,000 calls a day. Flatbush Hatzolah volunteers responded to thousands of those COVID-19 emergencies, and the community recognizes their heroic actions. Flatbush Shomrim decided that the community should show their support, and arranged a massive convoy of emergency vehicles to salute the volunteers at the Flatbush Hatzolah Headquarters located on Ocean Avenue and Avenue N. Thanks to NYPD Deputy Chief Charles Scholl, Lieutenant Ira (Yitzy) Jablon and the commanding officers of all the local Precincts (60, 63, 66, 70), numerous NYPD vehicles participated. Rabbi Jack Meyer of Misaskim arranged for the FDNY to join, and many other private ambulance companies that work with Hatzolah each day (Senior Care, RCA, and Assist) all joined as well. Around 50 Shomrim members along with their Command Center filled the convoy. Due to restrictions of social distancing, the entire event was streamed live on Zoom for all the members of Hatzolah and their families to participate and be thanked, as their hero husbands and fathers were out of their homes and in harms was for many weeks saving lives. The procession began with NYPD Chief Scholl on his loudspeaker saying “on behalf of the Mayor of NYC Bill DeBlasio, the NYPD, the FDNY, and all the residents of Brooklyn, we want to thank Flatbush Hatzolah for the outstanding work you’re doing, on behalf of Flatbush Shomrim and all the Coordinators, we want to thank you and keep up the great work.” Thank you Hatzolah! VIDEOS & PHOTOS BY YITZY ENGEL – AND JOEX DRONE26 . Beautiful and well-deserved outpouring of gratitude to our community's first responders.Thank you! Flatbush Shomrim Responds to COVID-19, Preventing Hundreds of Hospitalizations With Loaner Oxygen Concentrators

(By Sandy Eller) With relatively few crimes taking place locally during the current pandemic, Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol has temporarily steered its community service efforts in a different direction, providing equipment and services to allow less seriously ill COVID-19 patients to weather the virus at home. It was not lost on Shomrim members that their workload was considerably lighter than usual during the coronavirus outbreak while Hatzolah was being slammed with calls and hospitals were overburdened with patients. Trying to find a way to serve the community, Shomrim conferred with the medical community and realized that most people experiencing coronavirus-related breathing difficulties could avoid hospitalizations if they were properly oxygenated. Hitting the phones, Shomrim was able to get approximately a dozen oxygen concentrators donated, but it was clear that significantly more were needed in order to combat the skyrocketing infection rates. More than 250 additional oxygen concentrators were purchased from various sources, the Jewish community at large responding enthusiastically to a Chesed Fund campaign to finance the machines, each of which comes with a not-insignificant $800 price tag. Protocols were put in place to ensure that the equipment would be used properly and serve its intended purpose. Oxygen concentrators, as well as pulse oximeters to monitor heart rates, were loaned only to those with a prescription, while a group of doctors, physician assistants and nurses were recruited to stay in touch with participants on a daily basis. Frequent home visits were made to monitor patients’ progress, with reports given to their primary care doctors to ensure continuity of care. Shomrim coordinator Tzvi Weill estimated that more than 500 home visits were made by the group’s medical team over Pesach and that approximately 30 patients were able to return home on yom tov because they had oxygen concentrators in place. “We were meeting ambulances at people’s homes and had doctors waiting most of the time at the scene for them,” said Weill. Approximately 30 Shomrim members have been making deliveries to patients’ homes from temporary headquarters at the Pozna Shul on Avenue I and Bedford Avenue. Weill estimated that Shomrim’s 300 oxygen concentrators have kept hundreds out of the hospital and members have been fielding requests for other items as well. “We got one call on yom tov for someone who needed an oxygen concentrator, a pulse oximeter and a wheelchair, and our volunteers ran all over to make sure we were able to get everything they needed,” said Weill. “We also had a 24 year old coming home on Pesach after 10 days in the hospital and we arranged a full Pesach for him. Whatever we are being asked to do we just say ‘yes.’” One member of Shomrim’s medical team is Dr. Shlomo Gensler of Israel who had been visiting New York with his family and was unable to return home for Pesach. Having Dr. Gensler on hand was particularly helpful on the eighth day of Pesach, the final day of yom tov for Americans but a regular day for Israelis. “He worked straight through from 7 AM until midnight, non-stop in full HAZMAT gear, going from patient to patient,” said Weill. “It is a real bracha that he was here.” Among the other volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty were Avivit Mikhli and Chanie

Boro Park Scammer Arrested – Thanks To Joint Efforts By NYPD And Shomrim

After a coordinated investigation by the NYPD and Boro Park Shomrim, the suspect who has scammed more than a dozen victims out of thousands of dollars was arrested. The suspect was taken into custody from his home in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. As YWN had reported, the scammer would sit in his double-parked vehicle, and when cars would pass, he would hit your mirror and claim you hit his hand. He would then shake down his innocent victims for $50 or $500 instead of suing you for calling the police. Thanks to a wealth of information provided to Shomrim and the NYPD by more than a dozen victims, Detectives were able to identify the man, and make the arrest on Tuesday morning. YWN notes that these scammers usually continue their scam even after their release from police custody. One similar scammer has scammed hundreds of victims and has been operating in Flatbush for many years. Flatbush Shomrim has watched him in action dozens of times, which resulted in his many arrests, yet he continues to operate in the area. With the new bail reform law, one can expect the new scam artist to be released really soon (if he hasn’t already been freed without bail – along with free Met’s tickets by NYC Mayor DeBlasio). If you were a victim of this scammer, or have any footage of him, please call 911 and then Boro Park Shomirm’s 24 hours emergency hotline at 718-871-6666. Thanks to the outstanding work by our volunteers and great #TeamWork with @NYPDBklynSouth @NYPD66Pct @NYPDDetectives and Councilman @ChaimDeutsch, this scammer who has scammed numerous community members of thousands of #HardEarned dollars has been #Apprehended. pic.twitter.com/UCfnARnXET — 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐫𝐢𝐦 (@BPShomrim) January 21, 2020 Below are videos and photos of victims falling prey to the scammer. ALERT: Boro Park Shomrim Warn Of Scammer Claiming Cars Hit Him, Threatens To Sue If Not Given Cash

A scammer is on the loose in Boro Park, and Shomrim are warning the community to be vigilant and not fall prey. The individual seen in the attached flyer and video sits inside his car and when cars pass by he smacks their mirrors causing a loud noise and frightening the drivers. He then comes out and tells his victims that they struck his hand. Many times he has his hand wrapped in a scarf or towel. He then threatens to call police and go through your insurance (or lawsuits) if you don’t pay him cash. he usually asks for $450 or $500. Boro Park Shomrim tells YWN that there are so far more than a dozen victims that they are aware about. He has been doing this on many streets including 41st, 57th, Fort Hamilton Parkway, 16th Avenue and other areas all around Boro Park. He has so far scammed people out of (combined) thousands of dollars. Sometimes he asks if the drivers were drinking and says he smells alcohol and threatens to tell police that the drivers were drinking and driving. The NYPD and Shomrim are aggressively looking for the man. If you were a victim of this scammer, or you know where he is or have any footage of him, please call 911 and then Boro Park Shomirm’s 24 hours emergency hotline at 718-871-6666.
