Flatbush Shomrim: SIX Criminals Arrested For Various Crimes In Under 12 Hours

Perhaprs it’s the new bail-reform law or not, but Flatbush Shomrim has been working overtime to keep the community safe. In under 12 hours, 6 criminals were arrested for various crimes. It began at around 2:30AM Thursday morning, when volunteers on patrol witnessed a well-known suspect breaking into multiple vehicles on East 28th Street near Avenue R. The man eventually tried stealing a car and had already started the motor. The NYPD’s 61 Precinct responded and took the man into custody. He was in possession of around 5 pairs of high-end sunglasses as well as other items that he had stolen from the vehicle. On Thursday at around 11:00AM, the Shomrim hotline received a call reporting a man who had broken into a vehicle on East 27th Street near Avenue J. Shomrim responded and found the man walking on Avenue J towards Nostrand Avenue. He walked into Bash Pizza, took a fire extinguisher and walked outside the store where he began spraying it into the air. The NYPD’s 70 Precinct arrived and promptly took the man into custody. YWN notes that the viral rumors on social media that this was a hate crime or that the man sprayed the extinguisher into peoples faces inside the store, are 100% false and typical WhatsApp fake news rumors. Just minutes later, Shomrim received a hotline call reporting packages being stolen on East 28th Street near Avenue S. Shomrim arrived and witnessed three suspects in two vehicles stealing packages. They were followed while the NYPD’s 63 Precinct arrived. They were taken into custody on Schenectady Avenue and Avenue J. Both vehicle were impounded as well. In this incident, the caller had incredible footage from their “Ring” camera. Shomrim suggests that residents get security cameras on their homes. At around 2:30PM, Shomrim volunteers spotted a vehicle with a driver who have been plaguing area shuls with burglaries over the past few months. Shomrim is aware of more than a dozen shuls that were burglarized by this suspect. Shormim received many reports of this suspect engaging in other crimes as well. Additionally, Flatbush Shomrim has continued their foot patrols following the recent uptick in anti-Semitic attacks. Yesterday. Just after midnight, we received a call for a pair breaking into vehicles in the area of Quentin Road and East 8th Street. Great #TeamWork with @NYPD61Pct led to them both being arrested. #HereForYou #AroundTheClock pic.twitter.com/lMmmKFSZq4 — Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol (@FlatbushShomrim) January 9, 2020 Shomrim has dozens of volunteers patrolling the streets of all neighborhoods while the community is asleep, and are responsible for many arrests that many never get to hear about. STAGGERING NUMBERS: Flatbush Shomrim Finds 111 Cars Unlocked In Just Two Hours!

A special detail in Flatbush resulted in some shocking results, late Monday night. Following highly-successful similar operations in Williamsburg and Boro Park, Flatbush Shomrim embarked on a mission to see how many vehicles are actually left unlocked. Shomrim volunteers simply walked down the streets trying car handles, something that perpetrators do every single night. In under two hours, a staggering 111 vehicles were left unlocked – many of them expensive vehicles with their car keys sitting on the seats or cup holder. Not even 4% of the Flatbush area was checked. Shomrim left the vehicle-owners a note on the drivers seats stating that they found their vehicle unlocked, with a gentle reminder to make sure to keep their doors locked. Bob Moskovitz, Executive Coordinator of Flatbush Shomrim tells YWN that “this was not done to show our volunteers how many vehicles are actually unlocked. We know how many there are – because we assist the NYPD in arresting perpetrators for opening unlocked cars all the time. This was done as an educational event. We want the community to see this first hand and learn how to take simple measures to save themselves unnecessary grief.” It’s a daily occurrence, and as much awareness as Shomrim does for the community, people seem to never learn one thing: LOCK YOUR CARS! An overwhelming majority of break-ins involve vehicles which were left unlocked. The few that were locked, the drivers had left a phone on their seat, a laptop bag on the seat, a wallet sitting there, or a GPS device on the dashboard – prompting a perpetrator to smash the window for the item. While people love to complain that the NYPD does not protect the streets, it would pay for vehicle owners to take the simple and most preventable measure against break-ins by LOCKING THEIR CARS. Shomrim has dozens of volunteers patrolling the streets of all neighborhoods while the community is asleep, and are responsible for many arrests that many never get to hear about. Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol (Shomrim) Holds Annual Members Appreciation BBQ [PHOTOS]

Last Monday night, the Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol (RNSP) was joined by some of its partners and friends from around the community to express heartfelt gratitude to the patrol volunteers and to celebrate their numerous achievements at the RNSP Members Appreciation BBQ. This year, there have been numerous incidents in which the work of the RNSP has directly resulted the successful apprehension and arrest of suspects that committed burglaries, assaults, car break-ins, scams, and much much more. To the everyday citizen, these crimes go unnoticed – that is until one becomes a victim. Local law enforcement heavily relies upon and appreciates the work of the RNSP Tech Squad as well as their every day patrol volunteers. Detectives regularly call upon the RNSP or gladly accept the proactive efforts of the RNSP Tech Squad. The work of the RNSP Tech Squad involves gathering video footage, tracking lost or stolen devices, tracking stolen credit cards, and stopping hired household help from stealing. The work of the RNSP does not end there. In our world today, there are sadly a lot of people suffering from depression and other emotional problems. Many of these situations manifest itself in the form of missing person searches and the like. The RNSP works closely with Hatzolah, local fire departments, and other emergency responders as well as with organizations such as Achiezer and the JCCRP to ensure that all sensitive matters are solved and that the privacy of those affected is respected. As was the case in the past, this year, the work of the RNSP Search and Rescue Team has literally saved lives. One of the supervisors of that team, Eliezer Fuld, has worked tirelessly on many sensitive life saving cases. His efforts and that of his team is a complete chesed shel emes, a true kindness. It is the kind of work that serves no benefit to the one who does the act of kindness. No praise, no social media posts, and no other forms of acalades can be given to somebody whose work must always remain quiet and private. However at this past RNSP Members Appreciation BBQ, the organization had an opportunity to thank him for all that he has done without specifying what he did and how he did it. Eliezer (more commonly known as “Zezzy”) and his beautiful family made aliyah, leaving to Israel on the morning of Wednesday, August 28th. The Far Rockaway and Five Towns community owes a debt of gratitude to this man as well as his family for allowing him to do what he does no matter what day it is or hours he is needed. Congratulations to the other honorees and all of the RNSP patrol volunteers. The following are other RNSP volunteers that were also recognized for selflessly giving of their time and effort to benefit the community: Gedaliah Hoffman, Menachem Lerer, and Channa Leah & Natan Siegel. Gedalia Hoffman was presented with a plaque recognizing his dedication and commitment to the RNSP. He is always ready to answer the community’s calls for help. He truly understands and embodies the principle that a Shomrim member is on call 24/7. Menachem Lerer was recognized for his dedication and service to the community as an RNSP Dispatch Supervisor. In addition to responding to calls and ensuring that the RNSP’s

Flatbush Shomrim Nab Multiple Suspects For Burglary And Breaking Into Vehicles

Even if you live in Flatbush, you probably do not know this, but in just a few hours, Flatbush Shomrim volunteers helped the NYPD apprehend numerous criminals from the streets – and over the past few days – even more. In the first incident, Shomrim received a call at around 8:00PM Thursday night reporting a man that was walking house-to-house trying front door handles. Volunteers watched the man from a distance for over an hour, starting at Avenue P and East 18 Street. The man eventually gained access into an office near Kings Highway and East 2nd Street. He was taken into custody by officers from the NYPD’s 61 Precinct. Sources tell YWN that the suspect has been arrested 15 previous times, 13 of them for felony offenses. Additionally, YWN has learned that Detectives are attempting to ascertain if he is responsible for a home invasion last month in the area of Avenue S and East 2nd Street. In the second incident, at around 11:00PM on Thursday night, Shomrim received a call reporting a person walking on Avenue N and East 27 Street and trying car handles. After observing him for a short time, he was taken into custody by the NYPD’s 70 Precinct. At around 2:30AM on Friday morning, Shomrim members patrolling the area witnessed two suspicious males walking on East 26 Street between Avenue L-M. They were seen walking up driveways and trying car handles. They eventually gained access to multiple vehicles, and were taken into custody by the NYPD’s 70 Precinct on East 26 Street between K-L. On Friday morning at around 11:30AM, Shomrim received a call from a local resident stating that his car was broken into on East 28 Street between Avenue J-K and a credit card was stolen. The card was used under 10 minutes later at the Target on Nostrand Avenue near Avenue H. The victim tells YWN that he was unloading his car, and was away from his car for under two minutes when the crime occured. Unfortunately, the suspect was way too fast for Shomrim or Police to apprehend him. Earlier this week Flatbush Shomrim had a man arrested for breaking into vehicles on East 28 Street near Avenue P, and in another incident two suspects were arrested on Avenue M and East 15 Street.  Additionally, Flatbush Shomrim volunteers earlier this week successfully found a missing elderly woman who suffers from dementia. Shomrim has dozens of volunteers patrolling the streets of Flatbush while the community is asleep, and are responsible for many arrests that many never get to hear about. Shomrim reminds the community to always call 911 immediately if you see something suspicious, and then call the 24 hour Shomrim hotline at 718-338-9797. At 8:30pm, we received a call for a subject acting suspiciously on East 18th St. Our #SharpEyed volunteers kept an eye on him and eventually #ColdBusted this wanted career criminal breaking into a house. @NYPD61Pct made the arrest. #HereForYou #FightingCrime #KeepingEveryoneSafe pic.twitter.com/XE3K3HxPMd — Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol (@FlatbushShomrim) June 21, 2019 On Tuesday at approx 1am, our #NightWatch units out there #KeepingAnEye, observed a pair breaking into multiple vehicles on East 16th Street. #WorkingTogether with responding @NYPD70Pct officers, led to them both being arrested. #TeamWork #AlwaysOutThere #ItsWhatWeDo pic.twitter.com/PbcBCBdjKa — Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol (@FlatbushShomrim) June 20, 2019

THIS SUNDAY: Shomrim In Flatbush And Boro Park Holding Annual Bike Registrations

Both Flatbush (FSSP) and Boro Park Shomrim (BSSP) will be having their annual bike etching registrations this Sunday. If a stolen bike is recovered by Shomrim, they will be able to locate its proper owner through the numbers etched in your bike. Bike registration functions not unlike the way state registration of cars and trucks works. At no cost to the owner, Shomrim gives each bicycle being registered a unique number, which is indelibly etched into the framework of the bike using a metal-cutting tool, and the owner is given an official registration card, which should be kept somewhere other than with the bicycle itself. In the event that bike is ever lost or stolen, and the owner files a police report, should the bike later turn up (and they frequently do), the registration number proves ownership, so the stolen bike can be returned to its rightful owner. It also conclusively establishes the guilt of a bike thief caught with the goods who tries to lie his way out of trouble by insisting that he “owns” that particular bicycle – the registration card will say otherwise, in clear black and white. Last year, many bicycles which had been previously registered were stolen, and police later recovered many of them – and the owners got them back. In contrast, bike owners who don’t register bikes that later get stolen almost never recover their cycles; even if the police later find a bunch of stolen bikes, it’s almost impossible to match a particular bike back up with its owner if there is no registration number, and such recovered bikes are usually auctioned off by the Police Department, along with other unclaimed recovered merchandise. Shomrim strongly urge victims of bike theft or any other kind of crime to promptly file a police report, even if people tell you “it’s a waste of time and won’t do any good”; police reports provide the raw data from which the police and the patrol can sometimes figure out patterns that will lead to a criminal being caught, and can sometimes be used to connect past crimes with a criminal suspect, adding additional charges to his indictment and making it more likely he will be convicted or plead guilty and go to jail for a longer sentence. Boro Park Shomrim Catch Burglary Suspect Who Then Assaulted NYPD Officers During Arrest [PHOTOS]

A burglar assaulted two NYPD Officers in Boro Park, as cops tried to take him into custody, Wednesday afternoon. The incident unfolded when a homeowner called the Shomrim emergency hotline and reported a burglary. The caller said that a man just broke into his home on 53 Street between 18th and 19th Avenues, and that he confronted the suspect, asking him what he was doing there, to which he responded “I’m looking for someone”. The suspect then fled on foot. Police were immediately notified, and Shomrim began canvassing the area. They eventually found him on 20 Avenue and 54 Street. Police were notified where the man was, and attempted to stop him on 58 Street and 20 Avenue. Instead of complying with officers, the suspect fled on foot. He was apprehended on the same street, and began throwing punches at police officers. Additional officers responded, and the man was placed under arrest. Boro Park Hatzolah was called for the two injured officers. One was transported to the hospital by Hatzolah, and the second officer was treated on the scene and released. Boro Park Shomrim Nab Suspect For Stealing Vehicle, Breaking Into Another & Burglarizing Home on 59 Street [PHOTOS]

A man stole a van, burglarized a home, and tried stealing a second vehicle before being caught – thanks to fast acting members of Boro Park Shomrim. On Tuesday afternoon, a Shomrim volunteer driving down 59 Street between 18th and 19th Avenues, came across an abandoned van parked in middle of the street with the motor running. The Shomrim member walked over, and not finding anyone inside, asked a construction crew working there if they knew whose van it was. They responded that a man simply stopped the van, jumped out, and ran. The NYPD was called, and police quickly determined that the van had been stolen from a lot on 65 Street. Meanwhile, as police were continuing their investigation, Shomrim received a call on their 24 hour hotline stating that a person was sitting inside a parked car in their backyard. Shomrim volunteers responded and found a man sitting in the vehicle. Meanwhile, additional Shomrim members began securing video camera footage from homes on 59 Street, and immediately saw that the driver of the van was the same individual sitting inside the vehicle in a backyard. Additionally, they found video footage of the same suspect breaking into a home on 59 Street. He was reportedly inside the home for at least 5 minutes. The suspect was taken into custody by police, and was charged with burglary, and grand larceny auto. Sources tell YWN that the suspect has previous arrests, including one for possession of a firearm. VIDEOS & PHOTOS: Building Collapse in Flatbush After Car Slams Into Storefront; Shomrim Catch Hit-and-Run Driver

A building has collapsed on Avenue P and East 5th Street in Flatbush, after an out-of-control vehicle slammed into it on Monday night. The incident prompted a massive response from Hatzolah, FDNY and NYPD, just before 11:30PM. After an extensive search, it appeared that there was no one trapped in the rubble. The first floor of the building, a former convenience store, is vacant. Five residents who lived in the building’s second floor were not home at the time of the collapse. The upper floor also houses a real estate office which was closed for the night. The 20-year-old driver, Andrew Baird, of Brooklyn, got out of the 2018 BWM rental car and tried to run away on foot. He was apprehended nearby thanks to volunteers from Flatbush Shomrim who quickly canvassed the area. They were assisted by Boro Park Shomrim as well. The driver was taken to the Lutheran Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Baird is being held on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of the accident. He allegedly had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. There are also reports that a passenger may have run away from the scene. The city’s Office of Emergency Management used a drone to fly overhead to determine how best to safely take down what remains of the structure and the safety of the buildings next door. “Buildings will have to determine the stability of that occupancy before they are allowed to reoccupy,” Brooklyn Borough Commander Asst. Chief Wayne Cartwright said. KIDDUSH HASHEM: Flatbush Shomrim Help Locate Missing Alzheimer’s Patient [VIDEO & PHOTOS]

While many people were either getting ready for Yom Tov, or others planning their last short Chol Hamoed outings, dozens of members of Flatbush Shomrim were busy searching for a missing person – and made a tremendous Kiddush Hashem in the process. Shomrim received the call on their hotline for the missing person, Thursday morning, and along with the NYPD, launched an early-morning search for the 82-year-old  alzheimer’s patient that went missing in the area of Avenue U and East 4 Street. The missing person was not a member of the Jewish community, but that makes no difference to Shomrim, who treated this missing person with the same sense of urgency as if this were a Jewish person. Shomrim volunteers canvassed the area for nearly two hours, while nervous family members assisted the NYPD and Shomrim with any details they could. Shomrim worked diligently as they recovered security camera footage from multiple cameras in the area, as they worked frantically to track her movement. Thankfully, that paid off, and she was located by the NYPD and Shomrim, and reunited with her family, who could not stop thanking Shomrim for their outstanding work. Boro Park Shomrim volunteers assisted in this search as well. Just an incredible Kiddush Hashem – see the video below! SIGNIFICANT RECOGNITION: Three Different NYPD Commanders Commend Shomrim In Three Days

Three different NYPD Precinct Commanders have commended Shomrim in the past three days. The NYPD 61 Precinct Commander James King tweeted this morning that “Shomrim is an invaluable asset to the NYPD and we appreciate all you do!” King was referring to an incident early (this) Wednesday morning, when Flatbush Shomrim members patrolling in the frigid weather (24 degrees!) watched a man breaking into vehicles on Quentin Road and East 21 Street. The man ran into a building on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Quentin Road, but was taken into custody minutes later by fast responding NYPD 61 officers. The suspect had an outstanding warrant in addition to his new charge. In the nearby NYPD 70 Precinct, Commander James Palumbo tweeted how he was joined by members of Shomrim at the Community Board Public Safety Committee meeting “working together to keep our community safe”. Palumbo attends these meetings to update the community of the latest crime stats. The Community Board invited Shomrim to do the same since their members are on the streets in the dead of night, assisting in making many arrests each month. Shomrim Coordinators gave a presentation to the Board about the latest crime in the area that they encountered, and suggestions for deterrence. Meanwhile in the Boro of Staten Island, NYPD 121 Precinct Commander Matthew Harrington was grateful for the assistance that Shomrim of Staten Island provided at a Hachnosas Sefer Torah this past Sunday. Shomrim around NYC respond to dozens of calls each day, and are responsible for countless arrests. In the month of February, Shomrim collaborating with the NYPD made a total of 31 arrests. These arrests were made in Williamsburg, Boro Park, Rockaway Nassau, Flatbush, Crown Heights. Shomrim Member Viciously Assaulted in London; First-Ever Attack on Volunteer

A Shomrim member was viciously assaulted in Stamford Hill, London on Tuesday night, in what volunteer neighborhood watch group says was the first attack ever against a volunteer. Shomrim tells YWN they were alerted to a group of teens vandalizing Jewish-owned vehicles on Spring Hill, which has been a recent trend in the primarily Jewish neighborhood. A Shomrim member arrived at the scene at around 8:30PM, and police were called. After exiting his vehicle along with the complainant, the member was suddenly attacked with a large object and repeatedly punched in the face. He sustained serious damage to his eye, and was rushed to a hospital by Hatzola. The attackers ran off into the nearby Springfield Park, where they could not be followed in the darkness. The victim, in his mid-20s, is a resident of the neighborhood and is an Avrech in a local Yeshiva. Shomrim shared a close-up photo of the victim that showed him with a bloodied eye. A Shomrim spokesman said it was the first attack against one of its members since the group was established in 2008.
