Schumer Demands Investigation Of OnStar Over Concerns For Drivers’ Privacy

Senator Charles Schumer is asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate OnStar, a company that can track drivers and call emergency services in case of accidents, saying the service is able to violate customers’ privacy.

OnStar, which is owned by General Motors, recently changed its customer policy and can now maintain a communication link with a driver’s car, even if the driver no longer subscribes.

The company also reserves the right to sell information to various companies, including customers’ odometer readings, seat belt usage and how often the gas tank is filled.

In response to Schumer’s call for an FTC investigation, GM officials said customers have been thoroughly informed of the change and can choose to have the tracking disconnected.

A spokesperson also said the company has not yet sold any customer’s data and has no plans to do so.

  1. The use of such a system probably should be considered as “waiver” of privacy. By analogy, if you scream “help” in a loud voice, or stop your car and turn flashers on with a flag raised saying “help me” – you can’t really asset your privacy rights versus the authorities who respond.

  2. So uber left Chuck U Schumer wants to investigate Government Motors? Sweet. I wonder what they did to draw his attention?

    He MUST be defeated!

  3. It’s Sunday, so it’s The Schumer Show for the cameras. Getting very tired of this weekend nonsense. Please stop giving this clown a platform.

  4. …and for the rest of you zealots…

Ff Perry announced that Onstar was possibly guilty of invading privacy, I bet you’d come up with some stupidity that it was a Liberal quid pro quo for the “bailout.” Would you take a swipe at Schumer if he comes out for motherhood? Such stupidity.
