PHOTOS: Charedim Wear Yellow Stars & Holocaust Clothing At Kikar Shabbos Protest Against Discrimination

Hundreds are on hand at Kikar Shabbos in Yerushalayim this motzei Shabbos, attending a protest endorsed by the Eida Chareidis against the growing discrimination against the chareidi tzibur at large. Hundreds of police are on hand to maintain order as many of the participants have a yellow star pinned to their outer garment.

Pashkavilim were circulated last week to announce the event, which has drawn a large response, simply seeking to send a clear message opposing the mounting campaign against an entire tzibur, a campaign that enjoys the support of the media and politicians alike. Vehicles with public address systems mounted on their roofs traveled to Jerusalem, Bnei Brak and Beit Shemesh on erev Shabbos to announce the major event.

The pashkavilim reject any attempt to delegitimize the mehadrin bus lines, stressing the chareidi tzibur will continue clinging to its values of modesty and all this entails despite the hate campaign that is current sweeping the country, stating such a move is simply compliance with Halacha.

Adverts also mention objections to the presence of a dati leumi school in the heart of a chareidi community, a school that simply fails to meet the basic levels of tznius expected in a chareidi environment.

It also states that the tzibur paid money to live in areas far away from the secular lifestyle that dominates the country, and they, the chareidi tzibur at large, is not about to compromise on the standards in these areas.

  1. The ninth photo of the little boy is at best in terrible taste and at worst a HUGE chillul HaShem
    — its one thing to put on stars, (great Arts and craft effort btw, a little worse to put on the uniforms,
BUT the attempt to recreate the iconic photo of the warsaw ghetto goes beyond the pale — at the very least the editors should take it down before the mainstream media sees it and we get a chillul HaShem firestorm!

Is there any greater indication of the total disenfranchisement of this community???

  2. Very impressed! They usually don’t do thinks for the media to see but this does make a statement to the world at large. Not saying that its good to cater to the media, just that its an impressive statement.

  3. I used to enjoy walking in meah shearim
I used to give tzedkah to people dressed like chareidim
I used to see the beauty in parts of their lifestyle

    No More.

  4. Are they for real!!!!! Dressing their children like this!!!
This is only showing how absent of reason they are!!! I hope no survivors saw this picture!!!

  5. Where are they Rabbonim of the Badatz? Where is the Gavaad? Do they agree with these protesters and their methods? If they disagree with this metality let them be mocheh against it.

  6. This is the result of living your life in seclusion from the rest of the world. When all your neighbors are exactly like you and all your classmates are of the same religious strain.

Let this serve as a warning to all who wish to create exclusive communities and schools in the image of the chareidim in EY.

American community schools with a diversified school body have produced many Talmidei Chachamim who also excel in Deracheha Darchei Noam.

  7. The final comment in the article is incorrect. The Dati Leumi communities are frum and Torah Observant. The school in question is Orot, a religious school. The dati leumi communities were built years before the charedi community came to that area. These charedim purchased apartments knowing that the community near them was Zionist and Shomer Torah and Mitzvos. The sikrikim left their frum communities in Meah Shearim and Bnei Brak to come to BS-hardly secular environments! The fight is about territory and trying to force the character of this pluralistic city to be more charedi. Suppose they “win” and all the anglo people who made aliyah leave their gorgeous cottages for Modiin at a financial loss, will they then start picking on the Ethiopian community adjacent to Nofei Aviv? How about the Russian secular community in Migdal Hamayim? Then it will be the Morrocan masortiim, and after that, it will Ashkenazi versus Sephardi, or Chassidish vs. Litivsh. If you are not exactly like this group, you are not frum. Period. And you better leave the neighborhood or pay a price. They have caused several families to leave their neighborhood. In one family, one girl decided to not wear socks-she went bare legged with sandals while wearing a long skirt. They made the family so miserable about it that they left. So dear posters, imagine that you are living here in this area, and you are a nice Charedi family, and chas veshalom one of your teens has a problem with Yiddishkeit and decides to be lax in halacha in a “rebellious stage”. And instead of support and love, your teen encounters being spit upon and harrassed. How much longer will it take for your dear child to rediscover the love for frum Torah True Jews? From far it is so easy to criticize and take sides. And how many of us secretly judge other Jews negatively in our own hearts or online for what we perceive as their lack of observance? Only Hashem can judge us, and we are all judged every Rosh Hashana. It is time to show open care and concern for all Jews and to be mekarev each other with true love and acts of chessed.

  8. OMG,,,,I remember the dislike and anger when the Gush Katif residents wore YELLOW STARS as they were being expelled from the Katif area of Aza.

Oh so finally the truth as emerged, the Edah congregations does not want a Dati Leumi school in their breathing distance (tzniuus is second thought).

“It also states that the tzibur paid money to live in areas far away from the secular lifestyle that dominates the country, and they, the chareidi tzibur at large, is not about to compromise on the standards in these areas” —and so did the residents of Bet Shemesh pay money to live a Torah lifestyle far away from extremists..

  9. Ahh the age old trick of invoking holocaust imagery in order to prove a point.

Especially using children who are too young to understand how they are being exploited or to even have ever seen a holocaust survivor.

    Disgusting!

  10. It’s time to be mocheh b’kol ram for kavod Shamayim. All yirei Shmayim are duty bound to decalre in one loud voice that anyone who put on a “yellow star” in Israel is no longer part of our machaneh. They are not Jews and not worthy of any kavod. They have no tzelem Elokim. I would not insult Amelek by calling those animals such.

  11. What hypocrites! They don’t like being discriminated against but that is exactly what they are doing.

Also how dare they put on these uniforms! A mockery to what the Nazis yemach shemam did to our people. New lows being reached every day.

  12. using little children to to a chillul hashem ,what rotten parents, using babies to besmirch Hashems holy name .The Big Hit is coming unfortunatly ,to stop the Rishai Yisroel.Chaval that will do it.Only so much can H take

  13. We do not particpate in the government; we do not feel a need to defend Israel; we do what we want, when we want, no matter who it hurts; we feel that we get to take but never give. And we want respect. What am I missing.

  14. To #4 – Proud orthodox Jew
    and #17 – 10952:

What are the two of you saying???!!! You actually agree with what these ppl are doing???!!!

  15. #17, When was the last time Chareidim were horded off into cattle carts ? When was the last time Chareidim were gassed by the millions? When was the last time Chareidim were shot indicriminately ? When was the last time Chareidim were killed in front of their families? When was the last time Shuls and Yeshivos were burnt? In the worlds history books, thiose events took place in Europe by the hands of the Nazis YMS between 1939-1945. Don’t compare their “suffering” to something as henious as what the Nazis did.

  16. I only saw the first picture so maybe its worse then I thought, but we do need to realize to what extent the Chareidim are beaten up by the Chilonim. Before I went to EY it upset me when people called the Israeli police Nazis, but when I was there and the Israeli police tried murdering a Chasidish man I stopped thinking it was so wrong. People who intentionally try murdering innocent people are in the same boat as Nazis.

  17. Wow im speechless,
These guys just spat on the grave of my grandparents.
I can’t imagine ever forgetting this.
It no longer matters if they are right, or how much they are right, i no longer care what they have to say.
It just doesnt matter to me anymore.

  18. The people responsible for this disgusting display are forgetting the true lesson of the Holocaust: to Hitler, yemach shemo, all Jews were the same. He sought to incinerate the Charedi Jew alongside the Dati, Masorti, and Chiloni Jew. Ironically, it was the Nazis who perceived that all Jews shared a distinct character and a shared destiny.

The Holocaust is not something to be used as ammunition by one insular group of Jews against their Jewish brothers and sisters. Rather the memory of the Nazis and their horrific attempt to destroy all of us should lead us to greater achdus and ahavas Yisrael. Even towards the Jews who don’t dress exactly like us.

  19. TWO LIES in ONE statement…

“the presence of a dati leumi school in the heart of a chareidi community, a school that simply fails to meet the basic levels of tznius expected in a chareidi environment.”

Lie #1 – The school is NOT in the heart of a chareidi community, it is on the border line between the two communities.
Lie # 2 – The little girls attending the school do NOT fail to meet basic levels of tzniyut. To the contrary, in the eyes of any NORMAL frum Jew these girls are dressed in a TOTALLY tzniyusdik way.

AND… If these mechalalai HaSh-m think they aren’t tzniyusdik, why do they stand outside their school all day looking at them?!?! They should go back to the kolelim they supposedly attend instead of being mevatel zman the whole day!

  20. Embarrassing!! Excommunicate these clowns!! There is no place in Judaism for this stupidity.

    Let’s see:

-6 million men/women/children tortured and annihilated for the simple fact that they were Jewish. (6 MILLION!!) –

Some extremists who feel the need to be more “frum” than the Torah and disrespect women, disrespect all people who they deem not Frum enough (and then ask for money from).

Ya, that’s the same. Exactly the same thing. There’s a special place waiting for these people.

  21. craykanoiy:” Where are they Rabbonim of the Badatz? Where is the Gavaad? Do they agree with these protesters and their methods? If they disagree with this metality let them be mocheh against it ”

Where are they indeed? I am so discouraged by this whole mess. Where is the condemnation for all the tremendous chillul hashem that has been going on? There is no place for such extremism. I used to think “they are holier than me, I should stay out of things I dont understand”, but no more. People like this ruin Yiddishkeit for a lot of people. Disgraceful! Maybe the Mizrachi / YU crowd have had it right the whole time…….

  22. Gross disrespect to our heritage is an act of these “chareidim” cutting the ties to their own past. They are segregating themselves from Klal Yisrael. The only reason they exist and have the means to spread their fires of machlokes is because we support them financially. If the eida chareidis indeed condones such behavior- they need to learn the lesson that the powers of gayva, tayva, kaas and machlokes – have no place in Klal Yisrael. They need their funding cut off; the same way they cut themselves off from the rest of us. Now. Before something worse is done in front of the world for the sake of Kavod Hashem. Nebach.

  23. Does anyone else see the sick twisted irony of this story?
it seems many commentators on this site don’t (i’m looking at you, 10952)

Whereas the Nazis persecuted ALL Jews, gassing frum and frei, chaidish and misnagdim alike, together, naked, in the camps, these knuckle dragging short sighted ois vorfs don’t consider even you or me to be Jewish (cause we’re reading this on the internet) not to mention the other 98% of Jews that they discount.

These yutzmachs who lack total historical perspective have gone too far with this latest charade. While they may argue that they have nothing to lose because they don’t take any money (Directly) from the Zionist State, they’ve truly bitten the hand that feeds them: Kupat Ha’ir and colel chabad will have a hard time getting those 18 dollar checks that support these batlanim from all those holocaust survivors, and children and great grandchildren of survivors.
Well done! Unfortunately, our collective memory will soon forget these moronic acts and we’ll hear some insincere mea culpas from non-representative non-leaders and it will all go back to simmering at just below boiling until they do something moronic again.

  24. 10952
Well done?! This is the most retarded thing I have seen in a long time! Have they no sensitivity in their hearts for the Holocaust survivors?! How dare they make light of that?!!!

  25. True: the media has used the spitting incident to villanize the entire frum community.
True: Those who support the ‘spitters’ are outside the realm of Torah Judaism.
False: The extremist community came to the area at large expense. They baught appartments open to everyone to buy and many non-zebra-stripees live in the area. They abhore the anti-social activities of the hooligans, their only weapon is to call the police, which triggers off a red-flag to ex Mea Sheorimniks who live there.
True: The Orot school is at the border of two dati-leumi neighborhoods and two appartment buildings which is now considered a chareidi neihborhood. On the other side of these two buildings is an entirely mixed area with mainly frum French Jews, many Dati-leumi people and a few chareidim too.

  26. Though secular, I disagree with most of the posts here condemning the haredi demonstration.

I have sseen instances over and over of hilonim comparing haredim to Taliban. If the hilonim compare haredim to Taliban, then why are they surprised if they are called Nazis in return?

Further, while it’s unwise for a demonstration to involve children in politics, it’s not much different from the secular press parading Naama everywhere.

Finally, an article by a certain Shaked in yesterday’s Ynet called for violence against haredim. So why have Shaked and the Ynet editors not been arrested for inciting violence?

Both side should lower the level of rhetoric and hatred — but I’ve seen far more hatred, incitement, and provocation from the hiloni side.

  27. Just for everyones info the protest was just escorting a convicted protester that will sit for 2 years. And they are sitting in a truck that is suppose to look like a jail. I personaly attended that event.

  28. everything should be in perspective. the zionists during ww2 said that they prefer 1 cow in israel than the 6 million. in a way that they attack judasim they do resamble the nazis. think before critsiscm.

  29. I would like to take back my earlier comment! Originally when I saw the first picture I thought it was a good move now I’m not so sure. Let me explain. I was in EY for a while and saw what goes on. I saw police intentionally trying to murder a Chasidish man and almost succeading. I heard with my own ears from a police officer how he is going to break every bone and limb of a chareidi. I heard how one of the biggest Chiloni radio show hosts talked about Chareidim and incited against them. Not once was anything ever done to those responsible. Usually it wasn’t reported. When I saw all this it began to make sense to me. People were on the same path as the Nazis. Murder is the way of the Nazis even if its not six million. With such thoughts I thought that this protest was a smart move. Now, I’m having 2nd thoughts. Not to say that people aren’t acting in the ways of the Nazis, but IF this protest was all about being discriminated then discrimination doesn’t make for Nazis. At the same time this isn’t the Chareidims doing per say as its become an almost norm in EY to use names that people don’t deserve and to blow things out of proportion, but two wrongs don’t make a right. At this point of time I neither am for or against what happened, just waiting for more information which I’m sure there is. What I would like to know 1st is if this was done with the aproual of our Gedolim.

  30. #35:

Stop trolling. We know you’re not really secular, and a shill to try and make it seem like these clowns have some justifiable existence to the Chiloni world. It isn’t true, and you’re doing a bad job of it anyway.

  31. chazzl tell us that the threat of the Mesivnim were worse the Homan who whanted to kill us for the Mesivaim whanted to kill are Neshumah Matsiaho did not make peace put fought aginst most of the Jwish Peple (msivain see ramban) who adapted the ways of the Yevnim so if the Chridim blive that the mordern influeins is destring there kids then they shuld fight back and yes its worse then the Natzis.
