Bostoner Rebbe Yerushalayim – No Tachnun on Independence Day

As the nation prepares to observe Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israel Independence Day, the Bostoner Rebbe of Yerushalayim Shlita has released a letter explaining the minhag of the Bostoner Beis Medrash Givat Pinchas in Har Nof not to recite tachnun on the day.

When the day, as is the case this year, is a ‘nidcha’ pushed off, or on Bahab, as is this year, then tachnun is recited.

The Rebbe Shlita is basically continuing the minhag of his father, the previous Rebbe ZT”L, who refrained from reciting tachnun on the day in recognition of the chessed from HaKadosh Baruch Hu, opening the gates of Eretz Yisrael following the WWII, giving yidden a place of refuge following the devastation of the Holocaust.

As such, the Rebbe has re-affirmed adherence to the minhag, while pointing out that this is no way should be viewed as a connection to the secular Yom HaAtzma’ut holiday as observed nationwide.

  1. Its only a Chag if one treats it like a Chag. We need to thank Hashem. Daven with extra feeling. Give some Tzedakkah. Prusteh parades aren’t our way of thanking Hashem.

  2. I know Rabbeinu Meir Shlita for 50 years. He was a brilliant pikeach as a bochur and he is now shwoing that the tiferes of Bostoner chasidus lives with him too.

  3. To # 5 – it’s a Nidcha since they didn’t want Yom HaZikaron (the day before Yom HaAtzmaut) to be on Sunday, since the preparation for the ceremonies would otherwise cause Chilul Shabbos. Yes, the govenment does take Shabbos into account in making this type of decision.

  4. #5 The reason that it is a nidcha, is that Memorial Day is always the day preceding Yom Hatzmaut. This year Memorial day would have come out of Sunday and preparations could begin before Shabbos is over. The reason it is a nidcha is to minimize chilul shabbos.
Remember Memorial Day is a yahrezeit for many mishpachas that gather together, eat a meal and observe a learning program. They always push off Yom Hatzmauet if it will cause chilul shabbos….

  5. is it possible to see the halachic letter in print? or maybe the halachic work which he wrote i had no idea he was a posek
