In Ukraine, Restoration of Synagogue in Full Swing

sh.jpgNow that the Jewish community of Chernovtsy has succeeded in gaining title to the historical Synagogue on Sadovskiy Street, works aimed at its restoration are in full swing. With respect to the building’s transfer to the local community, fortunately the Chernovtsy City Administration was very cooperative at a time when it really counted.

Thanks to the leadership of Chief Rabbi of Chernovtsy Menachem Mendel Glitzenshtein and to the dedicated efforts of members of the local community, a great deal of restoration work has already been carried out. It is hoped that the Synagogue will be ready for its grand opening in time for City Day celebrations in Chernovtsy, which marks 600 years of existence this year.

Apart from the Synagogue, the land plot transferred to the Jewish community is also intended to eventually host a Jewish Community Center, which will house a variety of educational and cultural activities, the Youth Club, the Golden Age, and numerous other clubs.

The opening of the Synagogue will undoubtedly be an important event, not only in the history of the Jewish community but in the life of the multi-ethnic city of Chernovsty and western Ukraine as well.

The Jewish community of Chernovtsy – a proud member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine – is grateful to the Rohr Family Foundation for its generous sponsorship of this restoration project.
