NTSB Recommends States Ban All Non-Emergency Driver Cell Phone, Electronic Device Usage

Federal accident investigators recommended states ban the use of cell phones and other electronic devices by all drivers except in emergencies.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s recommendation followed a finding by the board that the initial collision in a deadly highway pileup in Missouri last year was caused by the inattention of a 19 year-old-pickup driver who sent or received 11 texts in the 11 minutes immediately before the accident.

The NTSB’s recommendation makes an exception for use of phones and other devices in emergency situations.

The board doesn’t have the power to impose regulations, but its recommendations carry significant weight with lawmakers.

  1. Wow, it took them a year to figure that one out!

Rav Chaim Kanievsky paskened already that anyone using a cell phone while driving is a RODEF!

Sadly, I see many frum Yidden yapping on their cell phones while driving; sometimes totally oblivious of their surroundings, on a constant basis.

When are we as a klal, going to learn to be more nizhar in ‘Vinishmartem meod lenafshoseichem’?!

May Hashem protect us, but we need to do our part!

  2. I hope this recommendation is passed into law immediately! It will save a lot of lives! People are maximally irresponsible and we need to regulate them in order to keep society safe.

  3. No. 1: Don’t tell the goyim about Rav Kanievsky, or they will think that Jews now control the National Transportation Safety Board.

  4. #3: The NTSB has no regulatory authority: they investigate and can make recommendations.

Poor cases make bad law: while dramatic, I don’t know that federal policy should be driven by one teenager.
The studies on concentration are more persuasive but lead to no phones, no makeup, no coffee or food, etc.
