Court Permits Construction of Tiveria Hotel Over Asra Kadisha Objections

The Nazareth District Court recently gave its approval for the construction of the Boutique Hotel on Alchadif Street in Tiveria. As was reported earlier by YWN-ISRAEL, the project is connected to a son of the mayor of Tiveria. Asra Kadisha officials have already stated they are certain the proposed site will result in disturbing an ancient burial site, and as such, they will not permit the continued construction.

There have been efforts to reach agreement, including meetings between the mayor and Asra Kadisha’s Rav Shmuel Smeidal, but it appears dialogue has been exhausted but an agreement was not reached.

The project calls for constructing a 15 room hotel on a site adjacent to the city’s ancient cemetery. The petitioners were hoping the court would accept their claim that the building permits were incomplete, but the court gave the green light to continue the construction since Israel Antiquities Authority officials have stated they have no concerns over antiquities on the site.

The court also compelled the petitioners to pay court fees in the amount of 21,000 NIS.
