UN Agency in Gaza Under Criticism for Handing Rockets Over to Hamas

A UN agency is under criticism after it handed over rockets found in a UN-funded school in Gaza to local police who are alleged to report to Hamas.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians  condemned the storing of 20 rockets in one of the schools, but instead of turning them over to a neutral party, handed them to the local police force, which was established by Hamas, the <>Times of Israel is reporting.

“The rockets were passed on to the government authorities in Gaza, which is Hamas. In other words, UNRWA handed to Hamas rockets that could well be shot at Israel,” a senior Israeli official told the Times.

A spokesperson for UNRWA said the rockets, found in a vacant school, were handed over to local authorities after the bomb squad was called, as per protocol.

“According to longstanding UN practice in UN humanitarian operations worldwide, incidents involving unexploded ordnance that could endanger beneficiaries and staff are referred to the local authorities,” UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness told The Daily

In an earlier statement, UNRWA said the incident was the first of its kind in Gaza.

“UNRWA strongly condemns the group or groups responsible for placing the weapons in one of its installations. This is a flagrant violation of the inviolability of its premises under international law,” a UNRWA statement said. “This incident, which is the first of its kind in Gaza, endangered civilians including staff and put at risk UNRWA’s vital mission to assist and protect Palestinians  in Gaza.”

  1. Who is the local authority?
Does the protocol deal with explosives that will be used by the so-called local authority to harm other civillians?
Does anyone really believe this is the first of its kind in Gaza (probably is the 1st time they told the public about it – by mistake…)?

  2. אחד בפה ואחד בלב. This agency of the UN, and the entire parent agency the UN has been rabidly anti-Israel. They have been preoccupied with anti-Israel activity. Almost all of what they do is focused on this. They seldom do anything else. The UN agencies have helped terrorists in Lebanon and Gaza consistently. UNRWA should be disbanded. The UN should be told to relocate to a country that is more receptive to their obsession with criminalizing everything Israel does.

  3. Let the Kerry and the Monkey answer that question when they get there to broker what they’ll call a ceasefire but the arabs pronounce it Sheees-Fire!! and that’s what they’ll do, no doubt!

  4. The Israeli and American governments are pretending that the “terrorists” are a bunch of criminals and are ignoring that Hamas is the democratically elected government in Gaza, the the military wing of Hamas are their armed forces. While it is dubious under international law for the armed forces of a country to store weapons in schools, religious institutions and hospitals – not to mention shooting at civilians, it is hardly unheard of. Those who want to regard Hamas and its soldiers as a a bunch of common criminals (as opposed to war criminals, which they probably are, since targetting civilians has been illegal since World War II) are seriously out of touch with reality. You can no more say you won’t negotiate with “terrorists” than say you won’t negotiate with “artillery” or “commandos.”

  5. #5 good point Arabs indeed pronounce ‘shin’ like a ‘sin (‘shalom’ in Arabic is ‘salam’) hence as you said, ‘Shees-Fire’.

  6. Arye: Hebrew – Shalosh. Aramish – Tulusu. Doesn’t mean Hebrew speakers use shin instead of tes. Just means in that particular word, it is andersh. Arabic has three letters for a standard ‘s’, so yeah – don’t say stuff you know nothing about.
