i got it. it was a different year and it was erev shabbos!
I actually think they are linked to the message up on the wall above. There are 6 lamps lit there lezecher the 6 million kedoshim, and I think maybe he also lit these 6 by the menorah for this reason. Just a logical guess.
Oops, except on second count I see there are seven…ok, I suppose we will just keep on guessing
No nothing to do with Shabbos. Chasidic Rebbes light 7 candles along with the Menorah for the Yom Tov. They light them every night of Channukah.
