France: Top Suspect In 1982 Terror Attack On Paris Jewish Deli Is Arrested In Jordan

jogThe Paris prosecutor’s office says the top suspect in a 1982 attack at a deli in the heart of the French capital’s Jewish quarter has been arrested in Jordan.

Spokeswoman Agnes Thibualt-Lecuivre said Wednesday the suspect was arrested on June 1. She described Souhaur Mouhamad Hassan Khalil Al-Abbassi as the “supervisor” of the attack.

Palestinians burst into the Jo Goldenberg deli on Aug. 9, 1982, throwing grenades and spraying machine-gun fire in an attack that shook Paris, especially the Jewish community. Six people, including two Americans, were killed, and 22 injured.

Al-Abbassi is one of three suspects in the attack sought by French authorities. Thibault-Lecuivre said France is requesting his extradition, but could not say how long the process of bringing the suspect to France would take.

  1. Wow. An arrest by the French for an attack that occurred 33 years ago?!

I’m surprised they kept the case open and made the effort to continue the investigation for so long.

I hope there still remains sufficient evidence (eye-witness testimony?) to convict.
