Sullivan Summer Visitors Means More Police Presence

The months of July and August typically mean the population of Sullivan County triples as summer visitors move to the Catskills from the City of New York.

Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff each year requests additional deputies to assist in patrols and this year is no exception. The county legislature earlier approved the hiring of six deputies for a 90 day period.

“I’m going to be down seven to eight deputies this summer and the six will bring me up to where I should have been,” he said. “I am very glad the legislature saw their way to give me those deputies for the summer. They will be very important for our office and for the public.”

The Sheriff’s Office and State Police are the two primary countywide policing agencies in Sullivan County.

  1. Those visiting for visiting day this sunday. More police basicly means more cops out to catch traffic violation, both moving and standing. Watch for suddenspeed traps (one example) is a 30mph limit on 42 through S. Fallsburg, it drops from 55 then 45 heading north finally to 30. It also means double parking, parking in spots that are “iffy at best”, and standing where you shouldn’t will have a cop at your window in 5 seconds, or less. It also means, and I watched car after car be ticketed for parking perhaps 6 inches over a solid white line, so be VERY careful.if your shopping at Landaus in S. Fallsburg, park in the lot not on street unless your car is as skinny as a bicycle, they will ticket you. The cops WILL look into the car to make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt and even to ensure those who require a booster or car seat, are in fact where they belong.
Some hot spots where they hang out.

    On heiden road.
Intersection of RR Plaza and Main (42) in S. Fallsburg, 4 corners, all over the main drag in Woodburne, at all intersection near Shop Rite and WalMart in Tompson. Where 42 hits Monticello. You name it, they are there to catch you. There is zero tolerance for things drivers take for granted in brooklyn. Rolling stops don’t exist. Stop means just that. Yield, means just that. I’m a summer resident in S. Fallsburg, this is the way they work. Come back in november, you’ll need your bedikas chometz kit to find these guys. This is our vacation, and their revenue season. How do you think they are paying for these deputies?
