Woman, 84, Whose Family Survived Kristallnacht, Dies In Ossining Fire

Ossining, NY – An 84-year-old Ossining woman whose family survived Kristallnacht and who fled from Berlin with them in the 1930s, perished inches away from her front door after fire swept her two-story home today.

Neighbors said that Charlotte Arner, who lived alone in the home after her husband’s death, was a longtime archivist, historian and translator who had been working on her memoirs at the time of her death.

Firefighters found her body in the front entranceway of her home at 26 Noel Drive after breaking down the door. They had tried to get in from the side, but the heat and smoke made an earlier entry impossible. They have since removed the body and an autopsy will be conducted this afternoon by the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Ossining Fire Chief Thomas Reddy said the home, stucco with a slate roof, contained the heat.
