30 Rockland Homes Required To Boil Their Water

bwp.jpgResidents of 30 homes in Rockland are being asked to boil their water before drinking it or cooking with it following three water main breaks in a little more than 24 hours – the Journal News Reports.

Two pipes ruptured yesterday, one around 6 a.m. in New Hempstead and another at 10:20 a.m. in Orangeburg, knocking out water service to 13 and 10 homes in those communities, respectively, for more than six hours.

United Water New York is advising residents to boil their water for one minute before drinking, cooking, taking medication, brushing their teeth, mixing baby formula or otherwise swallowing it.

Meanwhile, seven homes on West Clarkstown Road in New City remained under a boil-water advisory after a water main break Wednesday morning.

At a home on Viola Road in New Hempstead, one woman told the Journal News that her five children used bottled water to wash their hands in the morning. She had planned to go out to buy more when service was restored around 12:40 p.m., but her cooking was delayed, which she needed to finish by today, Erev Shabbos.

Water doesn’t have to be boiled for showering or for washing dishes or clothes, but said she isn’t taking any chances. She planned to boil her water today before bathing her little ones.

The Viola Road homes, as well as some on surrounding roads, were without water for nearly seven hours yesterday. The boil-water advisory was issued at 10 a.m., which is required by county law once repairs exceed four hours.

Most of the homes were between Route 306 and Union Road.
