Why Is HaRav Landau Against A Million-Man March Against Chareidi Conscription?

Rumors spread on Thursday about the organization of a massive demonstration against the draft of Chareidim and a shaila about the matter was even posed to HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau, Kikar H’Shabbat reported.

The Chareidi sector is beside itself with anger and frustration over the failure to enact a draft law, and especially over the restrictions on lomdei Torah and the intention to harass and arrest them.

One of the serious initiatives that arose was to hold a massive demonstration, like the one held in 2015 against the draft law, and in 2000 against the Supreme Court. Activists consulted with Rabbanim and a shaila on the matter was brought to HaRav Landau.

HaRav Landau decided that there is no reason to hold such a demonstration at this time.

The Rosh Yeshivah said, “The time is not yet right. At this moment, our activity needs to be firmly directed against the government, which is not honoring its commitment to us to regulate the status of lomdei Torah.”

“It is also not advisable at this time to hold demonstrations of this kind, because Prime Minister Netanyahu might even arrive with his crowd to the demonstration and turn it into a right-wing demonstration—against the Supreme Court, for his own reasons. And we see him as no less guilty for the fact that until now there has been no satisfactory arrangement for the Olam Torah.”

  1. The reason is simple. The Ros Yeshivah understansds that it will make the Frum Oilam look bad. How long can this keep on going ? The Frum Oilam is B”H growing and the army needs man power. It’s very simple. Today’s army is not looking to take anyone OTD. They simply need men to help out wherever possible.

I find it interesting that in the US, many “Chareidim” sign up for Shomrim, Shmira and Hatzalah yet in Eretz Yisroel it’s somehow not our job. You can be drafted and work on an ambulance saving Yiddishe lives or teaching children Yiddishkeit in the govenment run schools. It’s a win win for all. You will save Yiddishe Neshomos Shel Yisroel AND You get to make a Kiddush Hashem and not Chas Vsholom “Kardom Lachfor Boh”.
Don’t use your Torah as an excuse.

  2. Why was there no million man march against the first toeiva parade in Jerusalem as Rabbi Chaim kanefsky called for. It seems like only when there is an issue of money funds being cut is there a big protest.

  3. Participation in such a march will obviously make the participants lose the status of full-time learners, so they can proceed to the Army from the march. In truth, an angry march towards Gaza and having 1-on-1 discussion with Hamas would make more sense.

  4. It’s very obvious why not, the fryewhole point is that the charedim are huge sector draining resouces, and populating.. and it’s dif than 40 years ago when bnei yeshiva were small

  5. Small correction: The million man march against the Supreme Court was in 1999 not 2000.
    (I know, I was there)
