On Motzei Shabbos, the Rishon L’Tzion and member of the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah, HaRav Yitzchak Yosef shlit”a, delivered divrei chizuk to yeshiva bochurim, urging them to remain steadfast in their limud haTorah and not to be intimidated by rumors of possible arrests by military police.
Speaking during his weekly shiur at the Yazdim Shul in Yerushalayim, the Rishon L’Tzion said: “Do not be afraid—you are the ones who give strength. Fulfill within yourselves the pasuk, ‘Vayigbah libo b’darchei Hashem.’ Baruch Hashem, the military police do not enter the yeshivos. Do not be afraid-will the military police come? Stand up against them! It is inconceivable that they will come inside; they don’t. Sit and learn with diligence-don’t think about it at all.”
The Rishon L’Tzion emphasized that the Torah learning of bochurim provides protection for the entire nation.
“Be even more scrupulous in your learning,” Rav Yosef urged. “The soldiers receive their strength from you. All of Klal Yisroel being saved from the missiles launched by the Houthis comes in the zechus of your Torah learning. You are the ones who provide the strength.”
Concluding his message, the Rishon L’Tzion reminded the talmidim of the eternal truth of Torah: “We are ma’aminim bnei ma’aminim—this is our Torah. Anyone who says otherwise is a kofer, chas v’shalom. These are the words of our Rabbanim.”

His father Rav Ovadia had all the same things to say about the spiritual dangers of religious people serving, and there’s no one who didn’t hold highly of him. So maybe just think twice before you speak against his holy son. He’s not saying anything different. If you doubt it then just Google all what R Ovadia said about it.l
Even though I fully agree with his words, as a government official i don’t think he should tell people to go against the government
k’vod harav, without the idf, h”vsh, there would be nothing for your “zechus” to help with. this week’s parshah, shoftim, actually contains the 4 reasons for excusing a man from military service. and no matter how hard i looked, i couldn’t see where it includes “limud torah” among them.

Amazing!! Mr “shloimeboruch” knows the Torah better than all of the past or present Gedolim, really amazing, no? I commend you for being a true Apikoris. May you be inscribed this year in the book of all the zionist heretics and athies.

@coffee addict – he is no longer employed by the government – though I note that when he was, he did not allow a simple matter like the law to stand in the way of making political and incendiary statements.
@shloimeboruch – you are absolutely correct. I note too that even the four reasons given are explained in the Gemara as applying only to a Milchemes Reshus. In a Milchemes Mitzvah, the Gemara states explicitly “Kulam yotze’im – afilu chasan meichupaso v’kalah meichadra”.
an Israeli Yid
shloimeboruch
do you know the reasons it says, someone who was “yorei verach halovov” is one of the 4
you know who thats referring to? its referring someone who spoke out between barcuch sheamar and yishtabach or any other sin more severe than that.
all the ppl in your army would be ineligible for hashems army
and all the people in the beis medrash might have a fighting chance
israel and its regime has it backwards
Yeah so you really think the Chief rabbi missed what you managed to figure out? He knows the situations where everything applies and you don’t. You don’t serve in an army where there’s even a 1% chance you won’t keep Shabbos anymore after. Last I checked that percentage was much higher. And the type of soldiers that served in biblical times were people considered 100% righteous, even if you spoke between yishtabach and Yotzer ohr you were considered risky. Not like our pork eating friends today. So yeah maybe stop advocating for Rebellion against the rabbis they know what they’re talking about
Does anyone know whether – according to R. Yosef’s view of this issue – there is a formula by which the zechuyos earned by lomdei Torah (where? in E”Y only? in Chu”L also? are they weighted the same? differently?) can be quantified and tabulated alongside the derech hateva-dik effect of soldiers fighting such that people who run the country will know how to allocate slots for learning and slots for participation in the IDF?
Or does his approach not take such things into account – because he’s not running the country, but rather delivering shiurim, and thus doesn’t need to worry about it?
And, if he indeed doesn’t have a way to address these issues, how would people (if they would be shomrei Torah u’mitzvos) running the country make such decisions – according to him?
