Rav Kanievsky Shlita: I Will Escort the Talmidim to Jail

The head of the Vaad Yeshivos Rabbi Asher Tannenbaum visited with HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita to seek guidance in light of the expiration of the Tal Law.

According to a Shtieble report, the gadol hador informed the rav that no one should report to induction centers for processing. Rabbi Tannenbaum is quoted as asking them “If they are sent to prison?” to which Rav Kanievsky is quoted as saying “they should not go. Call me if they are arrested and I will escort them to prison”.

Rabbi Tannenbaum is well aware of his responsibility as talmidim are seeking his guidance regarding call up notices, compelling them to report to induction centers to begin the draft process. He felt he must consult with the gadol hador, who is quoted saying the talmidim should not report, even if it means being arrested.

In the erev shabbos Yated Ne’eman there was an article instructing talmidim not to sign any forms other than providing personal information and signing an affidavit that they remain committed to torah study. It appears Rav Kanievsky is adopting a sterner approach, instructing talmidim to refrain from reporting to induction centers at all.

  1. While the Israelis will be very content to make sure that yeshiva students who aren’t doing military service don’t get government funding, that doesn’t affect ones who are strictly hareidi since they don’t accept zionist money. Whether the Israelis have the nerve to start mass arrests of yeshiva students is questionable. For the Israelis it’s a “lose-lose” situation: if they end up making mass arrests it will be a public relations disaster, and if they manage to get large number of anti-zionist hareidim in the army it would seriously weaken the army.

“…that doesn’t affect ones who are strictly hareidi since they don’t accept zionist money.”

I assume you are refering to Rav Shteinman, Rav Kaniyevski, Rav Edelstien, Rav Elyashiv, Rav Auerbach, Rav Shach etc. when you refer to those who are not “strictly hareidi” because they have/had some dealings with the state?

  3. #1 The worst case scenario, and beleive it or not it’s possible, is that the Zionists will continue the funding to the Yeshivos while decrying the fact the the Chareidim are not giving back to the State. And besides the continuous ‘public relations disaster’ which this is causing frum Jewry, it is truly a Chilull Hashem.

The money that we are taking from the State is POISON.
