80: I should have known. You always seem to be on top of things.

The now CLOSED but very visible thread entitled MANSIONS is still on the site. It has very nasty comments and insinuations against many people. All it does is further eats away at the Achdus and Areivus one Jew is supposed to feel for another. The final comment which was edited to simply say Good Shabbos was particularly offensive.

It’s your site, feel free to do as you please, BUT Elul is right around the corner.

    Request to Moderators:

I find with varying frequency that some threads do not load. It is clearly an issue with my OS/Browser because others seem to have no problem.

The issue seems to be caused most often when a post contains a link that runs too long for one line. For some reason, the text does not wrap and the entire page is cut off from view.

May I ask that such links be enclosed in proper code by moderators when they have time so that the frequency of this issue decreases?

Currently, the “Facebook” thread, “El Al Luggage..” thread, and the “Girls Congregating…” threads on the front page all have this issue, due to links, as does Dr. Pepper’s “Google Satellite” thread.

    Thanks.

May I ask that such links be enclosed in proper code

    what does that mean?

    #1107872

What I mean is enclosing an excessively long link with the < a > markup. I know it is extra trouble, but I can’t expect every poster to do it for himself/herself, so I am laying the request at the feet of the moderators.`

    #1107873

i did it on the facebook thread. did it work?

There appears to be more Uranium 235 in the YWN Coffee Room in the last few weeks:

Definitions of moderator on the Web:

    * any substance used to slow down neutrons in nuclear reactors

    * in the Presbyterian church, the officer who presides over a synod or general assembly

    * someone who presides over a forum or debate or coffee room

    * someone who mediates disputes and attempts to avoid violence

    wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

    * In nuclear engineering, a neutron moderator is a medium which reduces the speed of fast neutrons, thereby turning them into thermal neutrons capable of sustaining a nuclear chain reaction involving uranium-235.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moderator_(Nuclear_Reactor)

How was it determined that I am a retired member? Semi-retired would be more accurate. Or was it supposed to be a hint?

    Josh-

At 235 would mean that we are stable. 🙂

The 238 version is relatively stable, the 235 is what can be made into bombs and is what destroyed Hiroshima 65 years ago.

Yes, I meant unstable (hence the smiley). I had started typing something else but then reworded and I didn’t do it carefully. The first word, “At” should have also been deleted.

How does one apply to become a mod?

    Moderator-80-

I was able to replicate the problem when using Internet Explorer version 6 (IE6).

The problem is caused by excessively long text without any spaces breaking up the text.

It makes no difference if the long text is a URL or plain text.

On the “El-Al” thread the issue is caused by post 139210, which has a long URL.

On the “Facebook” thread it’s post 139044, which also has a long URL.

On the “Girls Congregating” thread its post 139305, which has a long string of “=” signs without any spaces.

On the “Google Satellite” page, I think it’s more than one post with long URLs causing the problem.

If anyone’s interested, the way it was diagnosed was:

    1) In IE6, select “view–> source”

    2) Replace all href=”/ with href=”http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/

    3) Replace all src=”/ with src=”http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/

    4) Save the file to your local hard drive with a .htm extention.

    5) Open the file with your browser (IE6 in this case).

    6) Eyeball the posts in the source listing. Look for a source with a long unbroken string. Posts will begin with <li id="post-nnnnnn"> and end with </li> where nnnnnn is a number.

    7) Cut the post via cut-n-paste.

    8) Save the file.

    9) Refresh the view in your browser. If the page now displays OK, you’ve found the culprit.

    10) If the page still doesn’t display properly, paste the removed post and keep trying.

If you are a mod then you can just simply edit the offending post(s) to add some spaces or replace long links with link tags, this usually fixes the page. Whenever the pages get messed up I usually try to do that. If there is a long URL I will replace it with a “click here” link

I noticed several posts had “Click Here” links and wondered if the original post had them or if they had been updated.

Now we know who the “Mr. Fixit” is ?

I think that changing the color of hyperlinks (whether visited or not) to something indistinguishable from regular text was a mistake.

    Thanks for the new tag.

Mods, why can’t I change my profile? I thought the occupation field was just for private use of YW admin. Now it has been displayed for a while, and I can’t change it. Just want to say “Member” or something I choose. Thanks

I just removed the title under your name, which is what I am assuming you are referring to.

Recently, the CR has been “down” for hours at a time. Where are all the super-duper moderators?

    #1107907

A post of mine from last night on the “Capital Punishment” thread seems to have made its way to the reject bin.

If someone could do any of the following:

    a) un-reject it

    b) edit it so it meets the site standards, and then post it

    c) let me know why it was rejected (it contains two URLs, but they point to seforim and a learning site)

    …I’d appreciate it.

(I am only making this request because the post is learning-related)
