Which zoos are good?
I’ve been to the following, and have listed them in order of my preference:
1)Miami MetroZoo – http://www.miamimetrozoo.com/
2)Smithsonian National Zoological Park – http://nationalzoo.si.edu/
3)Cape May County Zoo – http://www.capemaycountyzoo.org/
4)Wildlife Conservation Society Parks – http://www.wcs.org/
a)Bronx Zoo – http://www.bronxzoo.com/
b)New York Aquarium – http://www.nyaquarium.com/
c)Central Park Zoo – http://www.centralparkzoo.com/
d)Prospect Park Zoo – http://www.prospectparkzoo.com/
e)Queens Zoo – http://www.queenszoo.com/
5)Claws ‘n’ Paws – http://www.clawsnpaws.com/
I am an avid fan of zoos. Any suggestions for zoos within 3 hours of either Brooklyn or North Miami Beach?
December 18, 2008 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #636025gavra_at_workParticipantHave you gone to wild country safari near West Palm Beach?
December 18, 2008 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #636027brooklyn19Participantummmm… WHERE exactly are you located that’s within 3 miles of BOTH Brooklyn and North Miami Beach???? lol
December 18, 2008 9:13 pm at 9:13 pm #636028noitallmrParticipantYou should feel right at home in the monkey’s cage…;-)
But seriously get yourself another username. I disturbs me. Even as a joke you shouldn’t call yourself after that guy…
December 18, 2008 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #636029brooklyn19Participantmr mod – could you fix my last post to say “3 hours” instead of “miles”? thanks.
December 18, 2008 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #636030Charles R. DarwinMembergavra_at_work:
Do you mean Lion Country Safari [http://lioncountrysafari.com/]? Yes, and it would rate as #5 on my list.
brooklyn19:
I live in Midwood, but I used to live in NMB with my grandparents, and they’re still there. Whenever I go to visit them I go on a Floridian trip with my family.
December 18, 2008 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm #636031NobodyMemberHmmmm this site is sometimes like a zoo and very popular too might I add!
December 18, 2008 9:24 pm at 9:24 pm #636032squeakParticipantAn avid fan of zoos? give me a break 🙂 – how can you support places that imprison close family members?
December 18, 2008 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm #636033gavra_at_workParticipantYea, thanks.
Just have good memories from going there back in the day
December 18, 2008 11:23 pm at 11:23 pm #636034ddParticipantHaving just come from the “Jews owning dogs” thread, I think that there are people here that should ask a shailah if one is allowed to go to a zoo. Zoos are full of tumahdik animals. Of course, the bittul Torah involved in visiting a zoo completely stops a ben torah from even considering a visit to the zoo. Finally, from reading numerous other threads, one must make the obligatory claim that zoos are ossur as makomos pritzus.
As an aside, the zoo in Yerushalayim is excellent.
December 18, 2008 11:28 pm at 11:28 pm #636035squeakParticipantA foolish comparison if I ever heard one. Even in jest.
December 19, 2008 12:59 am at 12:59 am #636036JosephParticipantsqueak, indeed. Its called letzanus.
December 19, 2008 1:37 am at 1:37 am #636037yankdownunderMemberWhy should I spend money to be entertained at an imprisoned animals expense? Is a spin off of this thread going to be about the Circus? Lions, Bears, Tigers, Monkeys, and the rest of the animal, bird, reptile kingdoms etc. need to live in the wild bush.

December 19, 2008 4:32 am at 4:32 am #636041Esther1MemberHas anyone ever been to the zoo in Philadelphia? I’ve heard that it’s beautiful.
December 19, 2008 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm #636042ddParticipantJoseph,
Were you referring to me with the letzanus comment?
My sarcasm was referring to people who reflexively assur the muttar. Look at your own comments in the “owning dogs” thread. Things that are perfectly allowable you insist are forbidden. So if leitzanus means mocking those who distort our Torah, then I am guilty as charged.
Also, the comment about the zoo in Yerushalayim was completely serious. It’s a wonderful zoo. One of the best I’ve been to. I recommend it especially to those who have small children. It’s nicely spread out, but without the excessive walking in some other zoos (e.g. San Diego or Toronto). A real oasis of tranquility in an otherwise busy city. It’s close to Malchah.
December 19, 2008 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm #636043nauseasMemberHow about popcorn park zoo (around exit 74 on Garden State Pkwy)? And the Turtleback Zoo in West Orange, NJ. They are both very nice!
December 19, 2008 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #636044SJSinNYCMemberI recommend a flight to Australia! They have really cool animals there! I was able to hold a koala at a zoo in Kuranda (right near Cairns which is by the Great Barrier Reef). We also got to interact with kangaroos and wallabies and other cool animals. Its well worth the visit!
December 19, 2008 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #636045feivelParticipantSJ
a not so smart friend of mine just came back from australia.
he visited the main zoo there.
but however many animals he described to me, whenever i asked him what the name of the animal was, he said it was called a “dangaroo”
i told him they couldnt all be “dangaroos” but he insisted
when i asked him how he could be so sure, he said there was a sign there. it said: ” do not approach the animals, all the animals are dangerous”
December 19, 2008 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #636046JosephParticipantdd – this is not the only thread you’ve engaged in letzanus. It appears habitually.
December 19, 2008 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #636047ddParticipantJoseph,
Yes, I do often mock people who distort our holy Torah. The other alternative is to cry.
But I probably shouldn’t have done it in this thread. The original poster was just looking for information.
Good Shabbos.
December 19, 2008 7:53 pm at 7:53 pm #636048JosephParticipantdd –
Let me paste what another wise poster said earlier today, that is applicable to you:
“Leitzonus is to make a serious Yiddishe issue not important because you made it seem much lighter then it is. For example after a mussar Shmooze to make a joke about the Rabbi who gave it is Leitzonus since the person you tell it to will not heed his words any more. Stam jokes are absolutely fine.”
This is the letzanus you engaged in. One would hope it does not repeat itself.
Good Shabbos
December 19, 2008 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #636049ddParticipantJoseph,
If that’s the definition of leitzanus, then I vehemently deny engaging in it. I only mock those who distort the Torah.
Nothing personal, Joe. 🙂

December 30, 2008 10:47 pm at 10:47 pm #636059squeakParticipantI don’t think anyone is going to get too worked up over the fact that a 16 year old boy thinks he believes in evolution. If relativity were controversial, would we give any weight to the opinion of a 16 year old supporting one side or another? There’s too much to analyze for someone to have a true opinion just after reading a single slim book.

You know, if you want to state that you don’t believe in evolution, that’s fine. But at least know what you’re talking about. The theory does not state that people descended from monkeys. It never did.

Why not? The factuality of what he says does not stand or fall based on his age. He is either wrong or right, regardless of his age.

That is true. It is either right or wrong. But his opinion carries no weight.

there are many aspects to the theory. sof kol sof, yes they do believe humans have evolved from a species that was similar to an ape. ever looked at those pictures?

you should be bothered if a kid is confused about how the world came about. (not that i believe he’s sincere. nevertheless, some food for thought.) believing many aspects of evolution is pure apikorsus. yes, there are some aspects that can be and may be true. (survival of the fittest and i forgot whatever else they’re called…) but even when you believe those can be true, we still need to know that Hashem runs the world, regardless of what “nature” is.

Has anyone by any chance ever gone to see the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba during the fall feeding season?
I’d love to do it (when I finally get married would make a great first trip as a couple). I’d also like to see tiges in their natural habitat and as I plan to make a business trip to India this year that is not impossible but most of the tigers are in semi-artificial nature reserves now. I’d also be sorely tempted to take a cub or 2 home with me LOL.

Ah, but that’s not the same thing as saying that he’s going to visit his ancestors in the zoo. Not one scientist will tell you that man descended from present day monkeys.
Now, personally, I descended from wolfish ancestors, so you *could* ask me if I was visiting my ancestors in the zoo. But the same does not apply to the poster to whom BLAHBLAH was poking fun at.

Here is what Rav Ovadia Yosef has to say about zoos:
Visiting a Zoo
Personally, I try to go once a year to a zoo. I forgot to go this past year; I’ll try to spend a day in Vienna the next time I fly abroad so that I can see the panda there. Then I get a double header – shekacha loi for the panda and meshane habriyois (followed by Dayan HaEmes if I actually get my hands on him) for Moshe Aryeh Friedman!
December 31, 2008 2:43 am at 2:43 am #636068000646ParticipantSqueak,
If evolution (not the mechanisim it is achieved by but that animals have evovled from a common ancestor) was controversial among leading scientists you may be right. However it isnt, EVREY leading proffesional in the field of natrual science beleives in it (yes even michael behe of the I.D. movement he just beleives certain aspects could not have come about by the forces of physics alone and would need an inttelegent designer to help them).
December 31, 2008 3:23 am at 3:23 am #636069JosephParticipantWolf,
So by your own statement you admit that a believer in evolution by definition thinks man descended from a non-human animal (ape or whatever name you want to give it), and as such evolution by definition is Keneged HaTorah.

December 31, 2008 1:53 pm at 1:53 pm #636076yossieaParticipantBTW, just to throw out something which I think was mentioned here. R’ Nosson Slifkin in one of his books (which wasn’t banned) talks about going to the zoo. Going to a zoo in today’s world is not as much of a problem as it was in the olden days. However, if the animals are treated poorly then it might be an issue.
