As for living expenses while in Law School, perhaps the same parents and in-laws that would support you indefinitely in Kollel would support you through law school.

WIY- The band forces you to limit portions. You still need to make healthy food choices and not cheat the band. The band will not stop you from drinking milk shakes or other high calorie drinks. There are ways to cheat the band, but if you are serious about losing weight you have to stick to the program.

Akuperma- For some people dieting is not enough. I tried every diet but never had true success until I had the band. I have a family history of diabetes and heart disease. At a certain point my Doctor told me that if I didn’t do something drastic about my weight I wouldn’t see my 40th birthday.

I know lots of people that have had the band, lost weight, and then gained it all back plus more. The band is not a magic bullet. I’ve learned to live without bread, challah, and many other foods that just won’t pass through the band.

I had the Lap-Band surgery in December 2001. Started at 305lbs now weigh 168lbs.

Even with the band you need to be disciplined, make healthy choices, and exercise if you want to be successful.

147- The Gatesheader Rov did not want to open a high school, it was a beis medrash. He was allowed to open it as long as it was under the auspices of the Kehilla and Rav Gelley. He refused to cede control and was therefore not permitted to open a Yeshiva using the YRSRH name. This Bais Yakov was opened under the auspices of the Kehilla.

computer777, if you are looking for approval you won’t get it. People smoke when they are nervous as well. Do you condone that? If someone has an anxiety issue, that needs to be dealt with on a therapeutic or medicinal level, not by turning to an addictive substance.

computer777- The scenario you mention is not potential alcohol abuse, it IS alcohol abuse.

It is a fact that alcohol and drug abuse are becoming more rampant in frum circles. I am by all definitions frum, and yes I am a recovering drug addict. If anyone wants to hear first-hand how easy it is to become an addict, ask the Mods how to contact me. What started as prescription pain killer use for a legitimate injury quickly spiraled in to full blown abuse. I am fortunate that I was able to get the proper help and deal with this issue before pain killers became heroin. This is not an exaggeration, Narcotic pain killers have the same addictive properties as heroin and pain killer abuse often leads to more serious drugs. I was not an alcoholic although I did enjoy a good drink, however drugs and alcohol share similar addictive properties. I attend Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings and have encountered other Jews from all across the spectrum of frumkeit. Both AA and NA share the principle that Alcohol is Drug. I used to think I was a big shot putting out the expensive scotch on Shabbos, now I cringe when I attend a simcha and see teenagers and young adults helping themselves to the alcohol. One does not need to be a “bum”, OTD, MO, or a teen at risk to fall in to the pitfall of abuse…it can happen to anyone.

in reply to: What Blessing to make upon Seeing President Obama #948397

My grandfather z’l related to me that as a child he made a brocho upon seeing the German Kaiser (obviously in friendlier times to the Jews). I do not remember what brocho he told me he made.

Additionally at the KAJ shuls in Washington Heights and Monsey the “Hanosen Teshua” tephilla is said every shabbos specifically mentioning “Adonienu Hapresident Shel Artzos Habris Yorum Hudo”

Politics aside, we must be greatful that we live in a country that allows us to openly practice our religion.

in reply to: Calling people with questionable smicha Rabbi #995571

A few weeks ago I noticed an ad for a Yeshiva dinner honoring several people who were referred to as “Rabbi”. I called the Yeshiva and asked from what Yeshiva a certain honoree was a musmach. The administrator told me “Living in Lakewood is enough to be called Rabbi”

I think that is a slap in the face to those who legitimately have earned Semicha.
