Petira Of Rabbi Baruch Poupko Z”L


This is to inform you of the passing of the Dean of the Orthodox Rabbinate of Pittsburgh, Rabbi Baruch A. Poupko. Rabbi Baruch Poupko, rabbi emeritus of Shaare Torah Congregation, died Wednesday, April 14, in Seattle, where he has lived for several years. He was 93.

Rabbi Poupko, son of the late Rabbi Eliezer and Pesha Poupko, was born in Russia and escaped in 1932. He came to Pittsburgh in 1942, and served as rabbi and then senior rabbi at Shaare Torah Congregation until 2004.

From 1949 to 1999, Rabbi Poupko was president of the Rabbinical Council of Pittsburgh and was one of the founders of the Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh. He also was founder of the Save Soviet Jewry program in Pittsburgh.

The levaya will be in Eretz Yisroel, and is scheduled for 11 am in Eretz HaChaim Cemetery in Bet Shemesh.

  1. When we used to visit Pittsburgh back in the early 90’s, he was still an active Rav there, and he told me many things about the years that he was a ben bayis by the Chofetz Chaim.
