A Route 17 transportation corridor study conducted over a 13 month period has concluded that a third lane should be built on the highway from the Thruway in Harriman to just west of Middletown in the Town of Wallkill.
The study also recommends improving key interchanges in Orange and Sullivan counties, providing new and expanded park and ride lots at strategic locations in the two counties, and recommends provisions for future transit.
The study said the highway, in its current configuration of two lanes in each direction west toward Monticello would be sufficient to accommodate additional traffic should a casino come to fruition. If that should change in the future, Jobson said the study could be amended to extend the recommended third lane beyond Wallkill.

Right after they finished redoing the roadway. Always wondered why they didn’t make it three lanes then.
