Bill Clinton: US Foreign Aid Cuts Would Trim ‘Outsize’ Good

Drastic reductions to the U.S. foreign aid budget would be “a bad thing” because the relatively small amount of money is well-spent, former President Bill Clinton told a coalition of U.S. humanitarian and development groups on Tuesday.

“It’s a bad thing if the government cuts US AID, because it’s a little bit of money doing an outsize amount of good,” Clinton said.

The Trump administration wants to cut funding to the U.S. Agency for International Development by nearly one third in the fiscal year starting in October. There is strong congressional opposition to the proposal, part of efforts to slash the diplomatic and development budget from $54.9 billion to $37.6 billion.

Clinton was speaking to InterAction, which says the cuts would be “devastating” at a time when famine threatens the lives of 30 million people and conflict has displaced 65 million worldwide, an all-time high.

“Slashing foreign aid by nearly one-third would shirk America’s longstanding bipartisan commitment to help the world’s most vulnerable people,” said InterAction, a coalition of nearly 190 U.S. nongovernment organizations.

Clinton commended countries such as Norway, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates that have sustained their aid spending, but said even if they increased the amount, it wouldn’t compensate for the drop in U.S. funding. The U.S. is the world’s leading foreign aid donor.

He said responding to challenges such as climate change and poverty required interdependence rather than an “us and them” mentality, which has gained traction in response to some of the negative effects of globalization.

  1. What is humanitarian? Giving aid to famished people, yes! Helping refugees, YES! Spending money on climate change, NO! Aiding PA that spend money on terrorists, NO WAY! Current administration would do well to publicize what and who will get cut.

  2. This clown could not balance a budget which affected America, but he wants to solve the problems of famine and poverty elsewhere? The tax dollars we pay are intended to finance our own country and its services, but we are the last recipients. Oh, let’s not forget the Clinton Foundation that enriched only the Clinton family with all the illegal and treasonous activity. Yimach Shemo Vezichro. He needs to spend his retirement away from public affairs. Maybe from the private affairs, too.

  3. Bill, whatever happen to earthquake aid contracts that Hillary’s state department gave to your friends that were not in position to help poor and suffering people of Haiti?
