Teen Who Stole Jewish Homeowner’s Mailbox Turns Himself In – After Seeing YWN Article With His Photo

Less than 24 hours after YWN published a story about a Jewish home in Chestnut Ridge, NY, that had its mailbox stolen, the suspect has turned himself in.

The homeowner, who spoke with YWN, tells us that his bell rang on Monday evening, and standing at his front door was the suspect who stole his mailbox. The suspect, around 16-years-old, had come with a female friend of his to apologize for his actions.

The homeowner told the suspect that he had called the Ramapo Police as soon as he saw him on the camera at his door, and he will let them deal with the situation.

The police arrived a few minutes later, and the suspect took out his phone and showed the homeowner and police the (Instagram) article first published by YWN – with his photo and video. He said a friend had showed it to him and it made him nervous so he decided to come apologize. Following YWN, the story had been published by CBS, NY Daily News, News 12 and other news outlets.

The teen was ordered to pay the homeowner for the cost of the mailbox, and would not be charged with a crime due to his age.

YWN has spoken to other Orthodox Jewish residents who have also related various incidents – many of them blatantly Anti-Semitic. One resident tells YWN he was recently warned by a non-Jewish neighbor on his street to “move out of here” just days after moving into his new home.

For those unaware, Chestnut Ridge is a village in the town of Ramapo, Rockland County, NY, located north of the state of New Jersey, east of Monsey, south of Spring Valley, and west of Nanuet. Many Orthodox Jewish families have moved into the village in the past few years, as the Monsey community continues to expand.
