WATCH: $100K Raised For California Teacher Arrested For Punching Student In Viral Video

Community members have raised more than $100,000 for a Los Angeles-area teacher captured on video punching a student who had repeatedly called him a racial slur and other names.

By Tuesday, a Gofundme page had raised more than double the stated goal of $50,000 for Marston Riley, a music teacher at Maywood Academy High School.

Video on social media shows Riley, who is black, repeatedly hitting the student, who returns some blows. Before the scuffle, the video showed the student throwing a basketball at the 64-year-old Riley and calling him names.

The student was treated for minor injuries, and Riley was released on bond after being arrested on suspicion of child abuse.

The school district says administrators have met with students, staff and parents “to begin the healing process.”

  1. The punk may have deserved it but now the teacher will face serious “child abuse” charges. He should have controlled his anger and had the punk suspended.

  2. Racial slurs are always out of line. Sure, the kid “deserved” punishment, but that punishment should be according to the rules of the school. Punching anybody – no matter the provocation – is only legal if there is a physical threat. When I was training karate, we were taught that you never, ever respond to words with violence, no matter how ugly they are.

No matter how much I sympathize with the teacher, he is guilty of assault and should be prosecuted, although if he is convicted sentencing should take into consideration the provocation. And the teacher should be fired, or placed in a position in the school system where he will not have contact with students.

Again, I sympathize with the teacher, but punching a student – or anybody else – except in self-defense is entirely out of line.

Sounds like the student started the PHYSICAL confrontation?
