A fire started underneath a parked car in Lakewood on Wednesday morning, and it was started by the hot vehicle.

911 was called to Clifton Avenue near 11th Street at around 10:00AM.

A vehicle had just parked on a large pile of leaves, and the fire started moments later.

YWN reminds our readers about the danger and hazards associated with parking their vehicles on top of or adjacent to leaf piles.

The temperature of the exhaust system on the vehicle will easily ignite the leaf pile and the vehicle. Vehicles should never been left idling or parked on top of the leaf piles.

Leaves can start on fire at about 250 degrees Fahrenheit A vehicle’s normal exhaust system or a catalytic converter can get up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a shield to protect the catalytic converter, but the shield gets hot as well. The shield can reach temperatures of 300–400 degrees Fahrenheit which is above what it takes to ignite a leaf pile. Therefore, there is certainly a fire hazard when parking a hot car on leaves.

To avoid the possibility of a car fire never park vehicles over a pile of leaves.
