Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is warning his country’s citizenry to prepare for a possible nuclear attack carried out by Russia and called for the stockpiling of radiation pills.

“We shouldn’t wait for the moment when Russia decides to use nuclear weapons… we must prepare for that,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky delivered the somber warning in an interview and shared the clip on his personal Telegram channel.

The warning comes after Ukraine sunk the Moskva – Russia’s flagship in the Black Sea, the pride of Putin’s navy. Putin has ramped up his offensive following its sinking and is believed to be apoplectic over its loss.

A Kremlin spokesman said that the use of nuclear weapons is not off the table for Russia, saying that Putin will not hesitate to use them if he feels that Russia is facing an “existential threat.”

  1. If he went nuclear, Putin would guarantee a long term ban on any peaceful commerce with the industrialized democracies, open the door for serious retaliation (e.g. NATO seizure of overseas Russian bases and commercial interests), and possible NATO intervention (e.g. bombing the Russian bases in occupied Ukraine, seizing Kaliningrad, closing the Bering Strait). It would guarantee that even politicians who favor befriending Putin (Le Pen in France, Trump at al. in America) would see Russia as an enemy. Most countries that are now apathetic and/or neutral would be openly hostile to Russia, and would start arming to the teeth (cf. Finland and Sweden). The last thing a rationale Putin would want would be for all of his neighbors, who are richer and more much larger in population, to be well armed and hostile (and likely to develop their own nuclear weapons, since using nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear power would basically void the non-proliferation treaty).
