Video: Hachnosas Sefer Torah at Merkaz Harav Yeshiva

hst.jpg

[VIDEO LINK AT END OF ARTICLE] On June 29 YWN posted an article about a Hachnosas Sefer Torah which took place at the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in Yerushalayim. The Sefer Torah was donated by children digging into their own pockets from over 30 schools in the USA. Most of the more than $30,000 raised were in $1, $5, $10 & $20 bills.

The Sefer was donated to Yeshiva LiTzeirim (the high school associated with and attached to Merkaz HaRav) where 6 of the 8 Kedoshim learned. The Hachnosas Sefer Torah was a extremely uplifting celebration and was attended by the families of the Kedoshim as well as all of the talmidim of the Yeshiva, and their Rabbeim.

Excerpt of original article: Yitzchok Fuchs of Flatbush and Yosef Wartelsky of Far Rockaway could not get the tragedy out of their minds. They felt a keen desire to bring some small measure of nechamah to the families. At the same time, they felt that youngsters in America, most of whom had heard of the tragedy, should be given a tangible way to feel connected to the plight of their fellow Jews in Eretz Yisrael. Fuchs and Wartelsky, together with the staunch support of Rabbi Yaakov Bender, hatched a plan: to collect money for a sefer Torah for Mercaz HaRav from yeshiva students in America.

More than 10,000 students from over 30 schools in the U.S. and Canada participated in the project. Children were asked not to raise money, but to donate money from their own funds. And donate they did. In denominations of singles, fives, tens, and twenties, the money came in. Many envelopes contained odd amounts that were clearly a child’s entire savings. It was evident that the tragedy of the kedoshim had touched the children’s hearts. Over $30,000 was ultimately raised, and a dedication was planned for Thursday night, June 12.

  1. What a unique and beutiful idea! teaching tzedoko to children without exploiting family relationships!

(i.e. in contrast to bribing children to pressure their parents to donate to the organization, in order to get the glamorous prizes promoted in the colorful brochures).

  2. this is just one example of what kind of adam choshuv and baal chesed yitzy fuchs is
the rbso should pay him back both bolam hazeh and bolam haboh

  3. Can someone please post the Israeli mailing address to the yeshiva in Yerushalyim where donations in memory of the bochurim killed al kiddush hashem can be made to.

  4. ‘Shakoach for the meaningful article

There were other sifrei torah donated that people are not aware of, 3 from toronto, 12 from london, and another Sefer Torah from the Children of R’ Burton Jaffe (PTACH) in honor of their Father’s ad 120, Yom Holedet.

Tehillim as a shir of thanks, or plea for no more tragedies, and a complete spiritual recovery is always appropriate.

Yitchok, have a zis yur a kesiva vachasima tova and the ability to continue doing your holy work!

  6. #1-is donating for a sefer torah tzedokoh?it certainly is a very important mitzvah,i dont know if donating to a yeshiva that i assume has many many sifrei torah,is tzedokoh or is it a mitzvah of ksivath sefer torah.
when we are being mechanech our children we must be mechanech the exact way.

  7. First of all, from what I have heard first hand from the organizers of the project, Yeshiva LiTzierim did not own a sefer torah until this sefer was donated.
Secondly, the goal of the project was to be mechanech the children about Avahas Yisroel. The children who particpated in this project made such a tremendous roshem on the families and friends of the Kedoshim
