Israeli air defenses intercepted a drone fired toward the Red Sea resort city of Eilat on Monday, after air-raid sirens sent residents to shelters amid a sharp escalation in fighting across the region.
Sirens warning of a suspected drone attack sounded in Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city. The IDF said it was examining the details of the Eilat incident before confirming the drone had been shot down. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The interception came during the worst flare-up since an April ceasefire. Israel struck Beirut’s southern suburbs on June 7 after a Hezbollah missile attack on northern Israel, and Tehran retaliated by firing missiles at Israel, the first such exchange since April. President Donald Trump urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to hold off on retaliating against Iran to give Washington more time to pursue a diplomatic agreement.
Eilat has been a recurring target throughout the war. The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have repeatedly launched drones and missiles at the city, and a Houthi drone that struck a commercial area near a hotel in Eilat on Sept. 24, 2025, injured 22 people. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday’s drone, and the military did not initially identify where it was launched from.
The army has interception protocols specific to Eilat, sometimes activating sirens only over the risk of falling interceptor fragments. Police bomb-disposal teams typically search for debris after such incidents.
