Obama Awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

obs.jpgPresident Barack Obama made history again Friday, winning the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Obama’s efforts to solve complex global problems, including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said.

“His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,” it said.

After the president was awakened and told he had won, he said he was humbled to be selected, according to an administration official.

Obama’s recognition comes less than a year after he became the first African-American to win the White House. He is the fourth U.S. president to win the prestigious prize and the third sitting president to do so.

The announcement Friday in Oslo, Norway, came as a surprise — Obama had not been mentioned among front-runners — and the roomful of reporters gasped when Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel committee, announced Obama’s name.

Jagland said the decision was unanimous and came with ease.

He rejected the notion that Obama had been recognized prematurely for his efforts and said the committee wanted to promote the president just it had Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 in his efforts to open up the Soviet Union.

As the news of Obama’s win broke online, postings on social network sites Twitter and Facebook expressed surprise. Many started with the word: Wow.

The last sitting U.S. president to win the peace prize was Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The other was Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Jimmy Carter had been out of office for more than two decades when he won in 2002.

This year’s Peace Prize nominees included 172 people — among them three Chinese dissidents, an Afghan activist and a controversial Colombian lawmaker — and 33 organizations, the highest number of nominations ever.

  1. Insane decision by the same Ero Trash that gave Jimmy (the anti-semite) Carter the award and also gave one to our old friend Arafat…who may I add is probably rotting in hell where he belongs for eternity.

  2. He hasn’t done ANYthing concrete or achieved any notable peace. He’s been in office 6 months. Makes a mockery of the Nobel Prize.

Who even nominated him? Did they have NO one else to choose from? Utterly ridiculous.

His ideas for peace are simplistic, unilateral, run along the lines of “Let’s everybody just play nicely now”, and are frankly, dangerously complacent.

Oh, wait. We stopped taking the Nobel Peace Prize seriously when Al Gore and Jimmy Carter won their prizes.

  3. This is insane… the Euro Trash that voted for Jimmy (the anti-semite) Carter and our old friend (now rotting in hell I hope) Arafat are at it again..what a shame!!

  4. Yassir Arafat, Jimmy Carter & Barack Hussain Obama all won the Nobel Peace Prize. Our esteemed President is in good company. Maybe in the future they’ll even award Achmadinijad or Kim Jung Ill!

  5. Too bad he couldn’t make piece in his own hometown, Chicago, where this year to date more than 45 children have been killed in school violence.

  6. Uh, I don’t have anything personal against the President, but what exactly did he do to deserve this?

You mean its possible to bring peace by occupying two Middle Eastern countries to fight terrorism? Interesting concept. Doesn’t seem to apply to Jews though.

  7. Might just as well give him the nobel prize for physics or medicine as well. He deserves it for peace just as much for the other nobel awards. What a mockery!

  8. Of course he ‘deserves it’, at least according to their reasoning. If Yasser Arafat could deserve it, so could Obama- especially after he goes to Europe and foreign countries and apologizes for the United States, and then recently makes a speech that Israel should give half of their country away to the Arabs! I’m sure they love him for that!
And it is scary when it says ‘the majority of the world’s population’. As we Jews in galus know- the majority of the world’s population is no friend of ours.

  9. What an insult to the likes of the great people who earned it, deserve it and to TRUE peace advocates! Its a political decision, period.

This is only a ploy to attempt to manipulate the actions of a man who obviously cares deeply about what the world thinks of him.

Maybe he should thank GW for this…since everything else during his tenure has been attributed to him

He deserves an Oscar/Golden Globe or Grammy for all his acting and show-off. But this? For doing nothing but make the US look weak?

OMG!! The Nobel committee has lost all credibility. Come on, it’s just ridiculous. He was in office for two weeks before being nominated.

But the Nobel committee has lost all credibility. After all—he was only in office for two weeks before being nominated. But I guess that after awarding the prize to Arafat nothing else matters.

  10. Why not give him the prize for medicine and chemistry as well. He deserves the prize for peace just as much as the other awards. What a mockery of this prestigous award!

  11. He has worthy predecessors – Yasser Arafat, Jimmy Carter. Now Hussein Obama can join this IGNobel line up. Poor Alfred Nobel – his entire name and vision for this prize has fallen into disgrace. How much arm-twisting did Emanuel and Axelrod do to get the committee to choose him… I wonder…

  12. It was actually the Nobel Peas Prize for his agricultural work with Jimmy Carter. Otherwise, the value of the Nobel Peace Price sunk to the level of the US dollar.

  13. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,”

In other words the minority who brought all the knowledge into the world doesn’t exist.

Imagine who this committee would have sided with in the time of Nimrod. They would have given Nimrod the peace prize for leading with the majority of peoples.

  14. Consider this!!

How to Win the Nobel Peace Prize In 12 Days

Although President Obama had only been in office for 12 days before the nominations for this year’s Nobel Peace prize closed the entire process actually takes a full year. According to the official Nobel
Prize Web site invitation letters are sent out in September. Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee sends out thousands of letters inviting a qualified and select number of people to submit their nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The deadline to submit nominations is February 1. — Two hundred five names were submitted for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, 33 of which are organizations. A short list of nominees is prepared in February and March. The short list is subject to adviser review from March until August. At the beginning of October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced.”
Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize this morning. Over the last decade the only requirement to win the prize was that the nominee had to be critical of George W. Bush (see Al Gore, Mohamed El Baradei and Jimmy Carter).
President Obama has broken new ground here. Nominations for potential winners of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended on February 1. The president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20.
Let’s take a look at the president’s first 12 days in the White House according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize:
January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.
January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an “open house” party at the White House.
January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how’s that working out?)
January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.
January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.
    January 25: Skipped church.
January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner’s  swearing in ceremony.
January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.
January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.
January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.
January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.
January 31: Took the day off.
February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

So there you have it. The short path to the Nobel Peace Prize: Party, go to meetings, skip church, release federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries, party some more.

    Need I say more?

  15. Maybe he can use the 1.4 million dollars he got from Nobel Peace Prize to help repay the money he wasted on the stimulus.

  16. the only sane thing about the Nobel Peace Prize is the million dollars plus that’s given. The people who award the prize are a bunch of left wing nuts who look for any left wing anti semite who deserves nothing and gives IT the award.

  17. Interesting there were only 2 other sitting presidents (both progressives) that received the Nobel Peace Prize:

    -Woodrow Wilson
    -Theodore Roosevelt

  18. The reason Obama has been awarded the Nobel Prize is because he is accomplishing what no other president has. Namely, simultaneously bashing America and, more importantly ,selling the Jews down the river. It is very obvious, he,(Barak Hussein) is very tight with the arab world and they have orchestrated this move. They have promised him many more incentives to come. Even the idiot peanut farmer (yimach Shemo),while he was president did not refer to the “Israeli occupation”. He waited to spew his hatred for Jews in full blown color until after he left office.
As for the selection “Committee”, I say in the inimitable fashion of Bibi Netanyahu-
    Have you no shame?
    Have you no decency?
    What a disgrace!
Perhaps they will award the peace prize to Osama Bin Laden.

  19. I think that I should win the Nobel prize in medicine because although I didn’t do anything yet I would like to find a cure for cancer, Parkinson’s and Lou Gherigs disease.
